Abstract

24,941. Drabble, W. P., and Bracewell, F. E., [Executors of Hulse, J. W.]. Oct. 27. Boring; milling; screwing; tapping.-Relates to machines for boring, screwing, tapping, and d milling various parts of water-tube boilers such as sleeves or running joints, check nuts or back nuts, feed collectors, &c. In one arrangement, the machine resembles a lathe, a bar carrying the boring, tapping, or milling tool being supported between the centres of two headstocks. A saddle provided with a self-acting traverse and a quick hand traverse is mounted on the lathe bed. The work 12 is held between two serrated rings 16 carried by brackets 13, 14, fixed on a transverse slide 11 on the saddle. The brackets are hollow for the boring-bar to pass through, and one serrated ring 16 is mounted on a sleeve 17 adjustable longitudinally in the bracket 13 by a worm 19 rotating a wheel 18 which acts as a nut for the sleeve. Half rings 15 form supports for the work. The work may be fixed on the slide 11 itself. Fig. 5 shows another construction of boring, milling, or tapping machine. A spindle 23, either horizontal or vertical, is mounted in a slide 22 on a standard or upright 21 on the bed 20. Several standards with slides and spindles may be mounted on the same bed. The spindle is driven from the shaft 28 through the vertical shaft 27, bevel gearing 26 with reversing-clutch, and spur gearing 25. Suitable mechanism is provided for traversing the standard or standards by power and by hand, for traversing the slide 22 on the standard by hand, and for giving a slow traverse to the spindle by hand or power and a quick traverse by hand. The standard 21 is traversed quickly by a screw driven from the shaft 28 through a transverse shaft 32 and bevel gearing 33 with reversing-clutch. The nut carried by the standard is formed as a worm-wheel and is driven by a worm on the shaft 38 actuated by bevel gearing 37 and a wheel 36 to traverse the standard by hand. The spindle slide 22 is movable vertically on the standard by a worm-wheel nut 39<b> rotated by hand on a fixed screw. The spindle 23 is traversed by a pinion gearing into a rack on a barrel surrounding the spindle and driven from the spindle through change gearing 41, worm gearing 46<a>, 46<b>, bevel gearing 47<a>, shaft 48, and worm gearing 49. The pinion may be operated by hand through a wheel 45 on the pinion shaft, or slowly through a wheel 46 on the shaft of one of the bevel-wheels 47.
