Abstract

13,351. Harmatta, J., Meebold, R., Weiss, G., and Berrer, H. May 29. Making casks.- Casks are formed in two halves which are threaded for being screwed or secured together at the bilge. The sheet metal to form the half is first stamped or drawn by means of a die or plunger b<1> to the shape shown in Fig. 2, the edge of the sheet metal being held by a ring e'. By means of a series of such operations with plungers of gradually increasing sizes, the half shell is finally formed with a number of shoulders g<1>, Fig. 7, which are removed by the die shown in that Figure. The shell may then be smoothened or further drawn by being placed on a mandrel and rotated before a blunt tool or roller. In lieu of forming the shell by dies of increasing sizes, it may be formed by dies of diminishing sizes. The blank from which the shell is formed may also consist of a disc, Fig. 16, the flange b<2 >being drawn by helical rolling. The corrugations or threads on the edges are produced by apparatus such as shown in Fig. 19, in which the shell chucked or held on a turning-lathe is rolled over the removable screwthread g<3>, The shell may be strengthened by being thus corrugated or threaded over its entire length; or, for strengthening purposes, a single grooved ring or depression may be formed on the shell by pressure. The two parts being screwed together, the overlapping edges are secured together airtight by the apparatus shown in Fig. 25, in which the cask is rotated in a lathe before discs a' which are moved towards one another to compress the corrugations.
