Abstract
11,704. Rites, F. M. May 11. Centrifugal and inertia governors ; cataracts and dash-pots ; electric governors.-The reaction of the valve gear due to inertia and friction on an eccentric or crank automatically adjusted by a shaft governor is made to effect the regulation of the governors for the purpose of varying the cutoff. The effect of this reaction, if the distributing- valves are unbalanced, is a tendency to shift the governing-mechanism so that the cut-off is retarded. The balancing of these forces may be effected by a dash-pot or air cataract cylinder 14, as shown in Fig. 2, provided with a valve 16 controlling the communication between its ends. By opening this valve fully, the dash-pot is practically put out of action ; and by suitably adjusting it the cut-off can accordingly be made to occur earlier or later. The controlling-valve may be adjusted by hand or by similar means. The regulation of governors in the above-described manner is especially applicable to a series of motors and dynamos which are connected with the same main circuit, and re required to work with loads exactly equal or in any other desired ratio. In such applications the governor controlling-valve 16 in each engine is adjusted by a solenoid apparatus, of which an example is given in Fig. 5, the operation of which depends on the differential action of currents derived from the generators the action of which it is desired to equalize. A switchboard and resistances 36 and a supplementary generator 33 are provided with each solenoid regulator for the purpose of enabling the relation between the currents in the coils to be altered by hand, as may be required at starting, before connection with the main circuit has been made, or when it may be desired to alter the relative output of the different machines. A form of centrifugal and inertia governor is also described, especially suitable in one or another of its various forms for use in the combination indicated above. This is devised so as to eliminate variation in, and to considerably reduce, friction between the various parts. It consists of a disc 5, Fig 7, carrying weights 5<a>, 5<b> and supported by springs 40 secured to the block on the shaft. On the face of the disc is pivoted the eccentric sheave 41, which at another point 43 is constrained by a pin passing through an opening in the disc and sliding in a groove in the supporting-block. Movement of the disc is steadied by a frictional device the braking action of which can be regulated. By the use of a governor constructed in this manner, the actions of gravity on the valve and on the governor can be made to counterbalance each other. Fig. 2 shows the linkage 7, 8, 10 connecting the valve and governor for putting these actions in opposition.
