Abstract

8168. Scott, J. W. March 30. Hides or skins, raw, treating; furs.-Hides or skins &c. are treated for transport, or as a preliminary process to tanning &c., by steeping them in a solution of molasses in water. When the hides &c. are to be transported, this process simply takes the place of salting ; if they are to be tanned, it follows the usual liming and bating process, and precedes the tanning operation or treatment with grease or oil. Equivalent saccharine bodies which will undergo lactous or butyrous fermentation may bo employed.
