Continuous and automatic discharge apparatus, rotary. - Relates to apparatus for drying road materials, &c., calcining ores, and distilling fuel, of the kind comprising a rotary scroll drum through the convolutions of which the material passes in contact with a heating medium, and consists in providing means for positively passing hot air or products of combustion through the scroll passages in a direction opposite to that followed by the material. As applied to the drying of stone for making tar-macadam, the stone is fed by the shoot m, Fig. 1, to the centre of the scroll b of the rotor and passes to the periphery of the scroll and is discharged through the radial tube o and the trunnion g which is provided with a helical vane p. Meanwhile a current of hot air or fluid from a furnace is forced or drawn through the tube q into the trunnion g, and through the scroll channels in the opposite, direction to the material and is exhausted through the shoot to the pipe r. The rotor casing consists of plates c connected by distance pieces to which the scroll is secured, and is supported upon rollers i and rotated through gearing j, k from a pulley l. The scroll channels may be provided with lifting- vanes. In a modification, the axle g<1>, Fig. 4, which is driven through worm-gearing, is substituted for the trunnion g and the fluid is supplied through the flue q<1>, the material falling into the discharge, shoot o'.
