Type-lever machines; accenting-arrangements. - -Type-levers bearing accenting-types are arranged to operate directly a device for preventing operation of the letter-spacing mechanism; in shift machines, the accenting-types are arranged as lower-case characters, and the device for preventing operation of the letter-spacing mechanism is rendered ineffective when the shiftmechanism is operated. The invention is shown applied to a machine of the kind described in Specification 21006/09 and comprising an escape. ment lever 5 on the carriage bad 11 operated by a tappet 6 on a bail 7 which is connected to a universal bar 12 operated by the key-levers 17, the bell 7 moving vertically with the carriage bed when the latter is shifted. The tappet 6 is now pivoted to the bail and co-operates with a slide 27 engaging a finger 35 on a rock-shaft 29 which is formed with a bend 36 in the path of the typelevers 19 that bear accenting-types. When such type-levers are operated, the rock-shaft raises the slide, and an incline 28 thereon moves the tappet and thereby prevents operation of the escapement lever. When the carriage is shifted the tappet is raised out of engagement with the slide and the type-levers 19 are ineffective to prevent operation of the letter-spacing mechanism, the upper-case characters on the type-levers printing in the ordinary manner. Normally, the tappet is held in contact with a stop 26 on the bail by means of a spring 25, and a finger 40 on the rock-shaft is held in contact with a stop 43 by means of a spring 39. The ink-ribbon vibrator 45 is operated by the bail 7 at each operation of the type-lexers, preferably bv the mechanism described in Specification 2127/13.
