Abstract

187,051. Wade, H., (Lichtenthaeler, F. E.). July 27, 1921. Motor spirit comprising alcohol-ether mixtures is produced by generating ether vapour, preferably from alcohol, and condensing it by absorption in alcohol. Alcohol is treated with sulphuricacid in a generator 10, and the ether vapours are neutralized and concentrated in a scrubber 14 and a fractionating-column 16 fitted with reflux condenser 18. The vapours then enter a - condenser 20, where partial condensation occurs even when only warm (80-85‹ F.) condensing water is available, the uncondensed vapours being led into a tower 24 where they are absorbed in water-cooled alcohol. The mixture from the tower 24 is mixed with the liquid ether from condenser 20. Where the condensing-water is sufficiently cold, preliminary partial condensation is omitted, and the ether vapour is directly condensed and absorbed in cooled alcohol.
