Abstract

184,579. Golle, E. A. May 18, 1921. Two-stroke-cycle engines; driving-gear.-In an engine having rotating cylinders, the pistons are secured to rods 73 having free ends which alternately engage recesses 24 in a stationary disc 22 and recesses 25 in a rotary member 20; the member 20 is secured to a central shaft 13. The cylinders and the shaft are geared together by toothed wheels and rotate in the same direction. A charge under pressure is admitted to each cylinder when the pistons are at the ends of their instrokes, the pressure of the entering charges forcing the pistons a short distance along the cylinders, thus disengaging the piston rods from the rotating disc 20 and engaging them with the stationary disc 22. The piston rods remain in engagement with the disc 22 during the expansion strokes and are released, after the opening of the exhaust valves, by the pressure of air compressed by the pistons in the crank chamber 31. The movements of the pistons towards the cylinder heads draw the piston-rods into engagement with the disc 20, which rotates the rods and forces the pistons into the cylinders to expel the burnt gases through the exhaust valves. The inlet and exhaust valves are actuated by cams 18, 17 on a stationary ring 16 which also carries contact pieces 19 for igniting purposes.
