Skips.-Relates to bottom-discharge buckets of the type in which the body and bottom are moved apart and closed through the agency of a single suspending-rope. When the load is being transported the hooked arms 25, 26 are engaged under the shoulders of the head 16 of the sliding member 13, and the load is then carried by the draw-bar 18, the hooked arms 25, 26, the sliding member 13, the pin 15 and the suspension-rod 8, which is attached to the bottom. When the full bucket has been lowered on to the dump, the rollers 36, 37 force the longer arms 27, 28 of the levers, pivoted at 24, towards each other, thereby moving the hooked arms apart until they disengage the head 16, whereupon the sliding member 13 falls down the squared upper portion 11 of the suspension-rod on to the buffer spring 12. On reversing the motion of the crane rope the draw-bar is drawn upwards until its bifurcated end engages with the bottom of the guide 20, and on further upward movement the sides 1 of the bucket are lifted off the bottom 4, thus discharging the load. On lowering the bucket again at the loading point, the body is lowered on to the bottom and, on paying out the crane rope, the weight of the attached parts cause the hooked arms to move apart sufficiently to pass round the head of the sliding member, whereupon they re-engage the shoulders on the head through the action of the springs 29. On taking in the crane rope the longer arms of the levers raise the respective rollers about the pivot of their supporting- brackets 34, 35 against the action of the springs 38, 39 which return the rollers to their normal positions as the levers approach their upper position. If it is desired to work under water, the automatic releasing and re-engaging means are enclosed by a water-tight casing and glands are provided for the draw-bar and suspension-rod.
