Abstract

183,023. Franzen, H. M. June 13, 1921. Planes, construction of, and connecting to machine; steering, balancing, and regulating altitude. -Planes 8, which can be moved together in a horizontal plane about axes 5 and tilted, either together or independently, upon shafts 6 to vary their incidence, project beyond the shafts 6, so that the air pressures are counterbalanced; the tail plane 21 can also turn about vertical and horizontal axes; and all the planes may have vertical longitudinal rudders or fins 32 projecting from their upper and lower surfaces. The shafts 6, to which the planes 8 are fixed, can rotate about their horizontal axes in hollow balls mounted to turn on vertical axes 5 in the respective ends of a transverse tubular support curving upwardly at each side of the fuselage 1. Arms 12, which can turn on each shaft 6, are connected together by cables 13 passing through the tubular support. Arms 11, fixed to the shafts 6, are connected by cables 15 to arms 16, 16<1>, which can be independently rocked about a shaft 17 by pedals 19, 19<1> to alter the incidence of the planes 8. To turn the planes 8 in the same sense in a horizontal plane about the axes 5, the shaft 17 is turned about a vertical pivot at the centre of its length. The tail piece 21 is carried on a shaft 25 turnable in a hollow ball which itself can turn on a vertical axis 23 in a socket in the fuselage. To incline the tail plane about the axis of the shaft 25, the control stick 31 is moved in a fore and aft direction. To move the tail plane in a horizontal plane, the control stick 31 is turned about its axis.
