Abstract
182,850. Gardner, C. E. May 1, 1921. Stationary batch-mixers with rotary stirrers ; continuous discharge apparatus. - Relates to a mixing and disintegrating machine in which two sets of coaxial helical blades rotate in opposite directions within a trough or casing, and consists in serrating the contiguous edges of the two sets of blades in order to break up pasty or damp materials and prevent them from " balling. " Inner blades k and outer blades r, both of helical form, are secured to a shaft e and coaxial sleeves m, respectively, which are journaled in the end walls of the trough a and are rotated in opposite directions. The inner blades are rotated at a higher speed and either or both shafts can be clutched to the driving-shaft as desired. The supporting-arms o which rotate close to the end walls of the casing have an inclined surface, or are provided with wings or fins, to return the material towards the middle of the trough. The outer edges of the blades k and the inner edges of the blades r are serrated, as shown, to break up any balls or lumps which may form in the material. The trough may be heated by gas jets, or may be fitted with a jacket for the circulation of oil, or hot water, or steam, in order to assist in drying the mixture. The trough may be elongated and contain two sets of blades of the same or of opposite twist. The discharge openings may be arranged centrally in the bottom of the trough or in the, end above the axis of the blades, when the device is used for continuous mixing.
