Openers, cleaners, etc.; feeding openers &c.- A machine for cleaning and teasing stuffing- materials and delivering it to the mattress, cushion, &c. to be filled comprises a chamber 4, Fig. 2 and a shaft 7 carrying beater arms 54. The chamber 4 is subdivided to comprise a feeding- compartment 22, a storage compartment 12, and a dirt compartment 14 fitted with a grid at the top and a drawer. Access is had to these compartments throught doors in the walls of the chamber. A passage 16 at one end of the grid chamber has an adjustable opening at one end to admit air, and is connected at the other end to a pipe and exhaust fan to deliver the teased material. The kapok or other stuffing-material in a bale is placed on a plate 21 in the ieedchamber. The plate 21 can be raised gradually by chains 39 operated from a shaft 38 driven by ratchet mechanism controlled by a cam on the shaft 7. The cam 27, Fig. 4, operates a lever 28 carrying a pawl 30 engaging a ratchet-wheel 31, which carries a pin 34 projecting into a slot in a lever 81. The lever 81 operates the ratchetwheel 37 on the shaft 38. A stop pawl 48, controlled by either the lever 59 or a linked lever at the other end of the chamber 4, prevents unwinding and can be released to allow the plate 21 to be lowered. Arms 52, Fig. 8, with pins 58, on the shaft 7 feed the material to the teasing-arms 54. The arms are secured in bosses 50 adjustable along the shaft 7. Loose stuffing- material can be fed on to the plate 21 in its raised position through a shoot which can be fixed in an opening in the wall of the chamber 4. The exhaust fan, which draws the treated material from the chamber 4 and delivers it to the mattress &c. to be filled, comprises a casing 64, Fig. 14, with intake and out-take openings 65, 66, and a plate 69 with ribs 70 disposed tangentially to the shaft 67. The ribs may be straight or curved or bent angularly near the ends. To allow the air to escape from the article to be filled the end of the delivery pipe 19, Fig. 19, is provided with a perforated sleeve 71 secured to the pipe. The mattress is attached to a sliding collar 72 positioned by pins passing through the collar and perforations in the sleeve. The mattress may be attached to the sleeve which may slide on the pipe 19.
