Abstract

178,877. Harris, C. W. Nov. 22, 1920. Screwing die-heads; chasers.-The die-head described in Specification 147,292 is modified for use as a self-opening stationary die-head. The chaserholders d, mounted on a carrier-plate c slidably keyed on the reduced end of a hollow shank a, are each provided with a roller engaging a slot f<1> in the cam-ring f. The dies are secured in an inclined slot g in the holder by means of a plate i, and are adjusted by a screw h. The cam-ring is secured to a slotted back-plate j by studs, and a flanged ring l screwed to the carrier plate serves to hold the cam-ring back-plate and carrier-plate together for simultaneous longitudinal movement. A circular groove in the back-plate receives springs m located between screws secured to the shank and stops in the groove. A rotatable ring p on the shank carries a latch q adapted to engage one of the stops in two positions for roughing and finishing cuts, and a screwed plunger abutting against a stop secured to the shank facilitates fine adjustment of the dies. In operation, the die-head is set by means of a mark on the cam-ring coacting with calibrations on the back-plate, and the latter is rotated to engage the latch with the stop for the roughing-cut. When the forward movement of the work is arrested the die-holder, cam-ring, and back-plate are drawn clear of the latch against the action of springs w and the die is opened. The latch may then be reset for the finishing-cut.
