Abstract
Alkali metal compounds, obtaining from complex silicates Relates to the treatment of silicates, such as potassium-bearing silicates and clays, in order to recover their constituents in commercially available form. The silicate is fused with boron trioxide or any substance that yields boron trioxide at a high temperature, and the resulting melt suspended in water and treated with sulphur dioxide. Bisulphites of the metals present pass into solution, while silica remains undissolved and is filtered. The filtrate is boiled, whereupon sulphur dioxide is evolved, the bisulphites converted to sulphites, and aluminium precipitated as hydroxide. The precipitate is filtered, and the filtrate boiled, with access of air to oxidize sulphites to sulphates. At the same time any iron present is precipitated, and filtered. The filtrate then contains sulphates of the alkali metals, if present and boric acid. The constituents are separated by frictional crystallization, and the boric acid used again.ALSO:These compounds are produced in a process for treating silicates, such as potassium bearing silicates and clays, in order to recover their constituents in commercially available form. The silicate is fused with boron trioxide, or any substance that yields boron trioxide at a high temperature, and the resulting melt is suspended in water and treated with sulphur dioxide. Bisulphites of the metals present pass into solution, while silica remains undissolved, and is filtered off, after which it may be treated with alkali to produce sodium silicate. The filtrate containing the bisulphites is boiled, whereon sulphur dioxide is evolved, the bisulphites converted to sulphites, and aluminium precipitated as hydroxide. The precipitate is filtered, and the filtrate boiled, with access of air, to oxidize sulphites to sulphates. At the same time any iron present is precipitated and filtered. The filtrate now contains sulphates of the alkali metals, if present, and boric acid. The constituents are separated by fractional crystallization, and the boric acid used again.
