Abstract

177,188. Popp, H. E. Sept. 28, 1920. Valves controlled by pilot or relay valves.- A valve device particularly adapted for use as an auxiliary valve for controlling the operation of a main valve comprises a double-beat fourway valve normally moved towards its closed pcsition by fluid pressure acting on a portion of the valve of greater area than the portion of the valve exposed to the inlet pressure, and is adapted when open to connect the pressure inlet to one service pipe while the other service pipe is simultaneously connected to exhaust. The Figure shows two such valves arranged in a common casing adapted to control the actuation of a large valve 45 and themselves controlled by electrically-actuated auxiliary valves 55, 56. The casing has two ported partitions 3, 4 connected by cross partitions 29, 32 so as to form inlet and exhaust chambers 5, 6 and to connect the chamber 7 with the compartment 19 and to put the chamber 28 in communication with the chamber 36. Each valve member has a pair of valve faces 16<a>, 17<a>, and is normally held in the closed position by inlet pressure admitted through a leakage port 25a, acting on a piston 25<c>. When the upper valve is opened by relieving the pressure on the back of the piston, service pipe 20 is put in communication with the pressure inlet pipe 11 and the service pipe 21 in communication with the exhaust pipe 14. These connections are reversed by closing the upper valve and opening the lower one.
