Abstract

174,755. Hall, S. Nov. 3, 1920. Spring devices.-Relates to spring devices of the kind described in Specifications 19460/95 and 13919/97 and applied to the wheels of road vehicles, velocipedes, &c., as described in Specification 11883/06. The invention consists mainly in dispensing with the bracket J described in the last-mentioned Specification by securing the pairs of plungers A to bridge-pieces B mounted directly on the axle, and in means for preventing binding and wear and for facilitating the lubrication of the moving parts. In some cases the bridge-pieces may be used in conjunction with the bracket J. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which is applicable to steering-axles, the plungers A are secured in bridges B formed with central bosses F, F' which are pivotally mounted on pins L<1> on the steering- heads L of the axle K. The stub-axle Z is carried by an axle box M which slides on the plungers A against springs enclosed in the plungers, flexible tubes being secured in collars l to protect the plungers. The boss F<1> of the bridge-piece B may be provided with a screwed sleeve N and lock-nut O for adjustment purposes, and the head L is cut away at L<3> to permit swivelling of the axle box M. The pins L<1> may be lengthened to pass through the bridges, their ends being screwed and provided with nuts, or removable bolts L<6>, Fig. 13, may be used in place of the pins L<1>. The pins L<1> may be formed on the bridges to engage sockets in the steering-head, and ball-bearings may be provided between the bridges B and steering-head L. In the modification shown in Fig. 13, the bridges B are cranked at B<3> and are fitted inside the arms of the head L, but they may be fitted outside the arms in order to reduce the length of the head. The bridges may also be applied to driving-axles or to the axles of trailers, as shown in Figs. 25, 26, and 39. The bridges, which may be either plain or cranked, are formed with recesses B<6> to engage the arms of a bracket W on the axle V, the bridges being secured by bolts X. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 34 and 35; the cylinders e of the axle box M are formed with one or more lubricant chambers e<5> and roller-bearings d are provided between the cylinders and plungers. The roller-bearings are secured in enlarged ends of the cylinders e by screwed plugs i which are formed with screwed recesses i<1> in which the inner ends of the flexible tubes j are secured by means of collars l. The bridges B are formed with screwed recesses B" in which the outer ends of the tubes j are similarly secured. The rollers d may have concave peripheries to fit the plungers, or their peripheries may be flat and the plungers polygonal in crosssection. In lieu of roller-bearings, the engaging surfaces of the cylinders and plungers may be hardened, or hardened steel bushes o, Fig. 39, may be screwed or otherwise fitted in the ends of the cylinders e. The plungers A may be formed with spiral grooves A<3>, Fig. 52, in order to facilitate the lubrication thereof. The bridges B and axle boxes and cylinders may be formed of stampings, drop forgings, or castings.
