Abstract

Controlling variable-speed gearing.-A handle is used having a fixed part 1 and a tubular part 2 which is turned relatively to the part 1 and also slid longitudinally upon it. The part 2 has a key connection 7, Fig. 1, with a spindle 3, which is connected by gearing 15, 16 to a selector shaft of the kind described in Specification 105,192, which is turned to select and subsequently slid, to operate, by electrical or mechanical means. To change speed, the operator grasps the tube 2 and presses a knob 19, Fig. 2, of a spring bolt 18 so as to unlock the handle. He turns the tube 2, thereby operating the gearing 15 and turning the selector shaft, which makes electric contacts to operate itself. On completion of the turning of the tube 2, the bolt 18 snaps into a recess a, b; &c. in a flange 2b on the tube. When the tube 2 is in neutral position, a pin-and-slot 2a allows the tube to be slid inwards upon the part 1 to bring the reverse drive into action. In this operation, spring contacts 14, which normally engage a groove in an insulating sleeve 9 are made to engage a conductor 11. As applied to a motorvehicle, the part 1 is supported on a tube 20 secured to the floor.
