Abstract

172,274. Bosch Akt.-Ges., R. Nov. 29, 1920, [Convention date]. Turning-gear.-An electric machine a serves as a starting-motor and as engine-driven generator, the shaft c of the machine being connected to a shaft e by epicyclic gearing comprising planetwheels k<1>, k<2> gearing with two internally-toothed wheels b, m having a different number of teeth. The wheel b has a free-wheel connection r with the casing and the wheel m is fixed on the shaft e, which is connected by gearing f<1>, f<2> to the engine shaft f. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the planet-wheels k<1>, k<2> are freely rotatable on a carrier g keyed upon the shaft c and connected by a free-wheel clutch w to the wheel m. At starting, the wheel b is held by the free-wheel connection r and the motor a drives the shaft e through the epicyclic gearing. When the engine starts, it drives the shaft c through the shaft e and the clutch w, the epicyclic gearing and the ring b rotating as a whole. In a modification, the clutch w is omitted and the planet wheels are connected by free-wheel clutches to hubs fixed upon the carrier g, which is freely rotatable on the shaft c, the planet-wheels being engaged by a pinion on the shaft c. In a further form, the carrier g is keyed upon the shaft c and the planetwheels are mounted on free-wheel clutches; the ring b is held during starting by an annular electromagnet in series with the main exciting coil of the machine a. When the engine starts and the machine a is driven, the current through the electromagnet weakens and the wheel b is released, so that the gearing rotates as a whole. The electric machine a has a motor winding connected in series with the field and the electromagnet at starting, and a generator winding connected with a shunt field winding.
