Abstract

171,572. Boulton & Paul, Ltd., and North, J. D. Sept. 30, 1920. Planes, construction of; framework. - The outer surfaces of aircraft wings, rudders, &c. are formed of sheets of metal, vulcanized fibre, &c., corrugated in a series of arcs, not necessarily sinuous, but in a direction transverse to the line of flight. The sheets 1 may be secured together with overlapping edge corrugations. The structure is supported by a series of corrugated webs 3, which may be bent to conform with the sheets 1 and strengthened with flanged ribs 5, which, as shown, are continuous over two adjacent webs, and with ribbed booms 7 situated at intervals along the wing, the whole being riveted together with, preferably, tubular rivets. Where the stresses are small, gusset plates 8 may replace the web members. Where the corrugations adversely affect the aerodynamic properties of the wing, a plain sheet of metal 9 may be attached.
