Abstract

170,283. Schenck Eisengiesserei und Maschinenfabrik Darmstadt Ges., C., and Heymann, H. Oct. 12, 1920, [Convention date]. Testing balance of rotary apparatus. - In a method wherein the balancing mass is automatically moved into the radial plane of the unbalanced force, the balancing mass is carried round by frictional engagement with the body to be balanced, this engagement being interrupted when the critical speed is exceeded so that the freely rotatable balancing mass moves automatically into the radial plane of the unbalanced force, whereupon the balancing mass is recoupled to the body to be balanced. A sleeve 10 is fixed to the shaft 12 of the body to be balanced and is fitted at the ends with spring plates 13, 14 which press on discs 15, 16 splined and loose respectively on the sleeve, so as to grip between them a disc 18 loose on the sleeve. Mounted in the disc 18 is a mass 21 which is free to move radially relatively to the disc. The mass 21 is provided with a screw 27 the point of which engages with the helical groove 26 in a spindle 25 upon which the mass is mounted. A pointer attached to the part 21 works over a scale on the disc 18. Mounted on the inner end of the spindle 25 is a conical roller 30 adapted to engage a similar surface on the disc 16. In use, the device is mounted on the body to be balanced, and the body is run up to and beyond the critical speed. A wedge 34 is then applied so as to free the disc 18, which thereupon assumes a position in which the mass 21 is in the same radial plane and is opposed to the unbalanced force. When this has taken place, the wedge is released, and the disc 18 again gripped between the discs 15, 16. The speed is then reduced so that the body passes slowly through the region of the critical speed, and at the same time, a brake 37 is applied to the disc 16 at intervals. Every time the brake is applied the screw spindle 25 rotates and the mass 21 is thus moved radially until the unbalanced force is balanced, which point is recognised by the absence of vibration indicated when the hand is placed on the body or bv a vibration meter. The discs and sleeve may be made in parts to facilitate assembly, and preferably two balancing devices are mounted on the body to be balanced.
