Abstract

169,382. Ireland, A. J. T. Sept. 9, 1920. Screw propellers.-Relates to the blades of propellers, windmills, fans, &c. which are pivotally and adjustably secured to the hub, and consists in attaching the blades by pins which lie parallel to the hub axis, the pins passing through holes in lugs on the hub and in lugs on the blade roots or attachments thereto, the blades being further held by dogs, teeth, &c. in a casing on or attached to the hub. The hub, Fig. 1, has lugs or collars 4 connected by an anchoring nin 9 with lugs 8 in a cap 7 which passes around the blade socket 5 and has a spigot 13 which passes through blade base 19. The cap is secured to the socket by a bridge-piece 18 held by the nut 14. The outer casing is in two parts 11, 12 secured to the hub by ring nuts 22, 24, the flanges being held together by bolts 26. Each half casing is enlarged at 25 to take the blade sockets, the enlargements being reinforced by webs 28 and flanges 27. In a modification, a simple bifurcated eye-bolt may be used and the blade root guided by an internal ring on the casing parallel to the flanges 27. When no pitch adjustment is desired. the bifurcated lugs may be attached directly to the blade root. When the casing is in one piece, openings 30 are provided for giving access to the anchoring-pin. The inner walls of the casing sockets are serrated or toothed at 31 to engage corresponding parts 32 on the blade roots for the purposing of maintaining or setting the blades at the desired pitch. For altering the pitch, the two-part casing may be separated, or the blades withdrawn radially, and in the latter method this can be effected without disconnecting the anchoring pin if a spring is fitted between the blade root and the anchoring- pin.
