Abstract

167,613. Commin, F. J. May 20, 1920. Pulp, adding special substances to; fire-proof paper.-A composite millboard, papier mÔchÚ, or like material comprising fibrous material and pitch, suitable for roofing, walling boards, doors, skirtings, floors, ceilings, boxes, cisterns, railwaycarriage and motor-car bodies, and other purposes, is produced by using pitch that has been deflocculated by a peptizing-agent according to the method described in Specification 162,727. The deflocculated pitch, suspended in a semi-colloidal state in about an equal quantity by weight of a solution of a peptizing-agent such as sodium resinate, is added to pulp and thoroughly mixed,. and the mixture felted on a paper-making or similar machine. Aluminium sulphate may be added to promote rapid filtration. The sheets are cut to the shape of the finished article, superposed to the desired thickness and subjected to pressure in a heated hydraulic or other press. The strength of the finished article may be increased by crossing the fibres of the superposed sheets. The fibrous material used may be cotton, linen, hemp, jute, esparto, wood cellulcse, agalite, asbestos, lignined straw, hair, wool,. waste paper, &c., and clay, chalk, silica, cement, magnesite, &c. may be added to render the material fire-resisting.
