Abstract

Locks, permutation; padlocks.-The shackle h of a padlock is held in the locked position by a bolt a, upon which are lugs d, d<1>. &c. co-operating with notched setting discs b, b<1>, &c., mounted on the bolt, each having a spring- pressed detent k, k<1>, &c. Indentation l on the edges of the discs act with the detents to produce clicks or impacts when revolved, and one indentation z is shaped to limit revolution in one direction, on engaging the detent, but not in the reverse direction. The detents are retained in the casing when the discs are removed, by shoulders. The lugs d, d', &c. may be mounted in sleeves s, s<1>, &c. on the bolt a, as shown in Fig. 3, allowing them to be turned to change the combination, and secured in position by a screw t. To operate the padlock, the discs are turned in the direction of their limited rotation as far as possible, and then in the reverse direction through a certain number of clicks. This brings the notches c opposite the lugs d, and the bolt a can be withdrawn to release the shackle h. In a modification, the bolt a may have inclines or recesses to operate the spring catches of a bag fastening.
