Abstract

165,937. Schroeder, G. April 1, 1920. Armatures and field magnets, cooling.-In cooling electric machines by circulating a cooling- liquid through tubes formed or inserted in the core, so as to be across the oath of movement of the flux, the tubes and end connections are formed of, or provided with portions or insertion pieces of non-conducting material so that there is no closed metallic circuit in the croling-system for the flow of electric currents. In one arrangement shown on the left-hand side of Fig. 2, the tubes are made of insulating-material and are connected together at the ends of the core by cast metal chambers n. In another arrangement in which metallic tubes are inserted in the core, the end connecting parts are divided into two parts connected by a coupling o of insulating-material. The ducts in the core are formed by means of a series of registering holes in the laminµ and tubular bridge-pieces in the gaps between the bundles of laminµ. Where metallic tubes are not used, the surface of the ducts may be first coated with a liquid or semi-liquid insulating-substance and powder distributed over the surface so as to build up a coating, or a substance which can be vulcanized in position, may be used. Such a substance in the form of a strip can be wrapped round a mandrel and inserted in a duct and the mandrel heated to vulcanize the substance.
