Abstract

165,732. Picotin, J. June 30, 1920, [Convention date]. Drawing wire.-In drawing wire, the wire is cooled immediately after passing through the die, so that the heat generated by drawing may be utilized to keep the wire ductile during drawing and the wire then quickly cooled, prior to reaching the winding drum. Further, the wire may be heated if desired prior to drawing, or may be lubricated prior to drawing with a liquid different from the cooling liquid. As shown in Fig. 3, the wire is drawn by drums g, g', &c. through a series of dies f, f<1>, &c., having on their exit sides cooling baths a through which the wire passes, the baths having inlet and overflow tubes b, c. The drums g, g<1>, &c., may be on separate shafts or they may be of required diameters so as to be mounted on a common shaft. The wire on leaving the baths carries a portion of the liquid to the drums so that it may slide more easily thereon. In an apparatus as shown in Fig. 2, winding drums carried at each end of a shaft 2 driven by a central pulley 3, are arranged to draw separate wires from spools 21 in a receptacle 22 containing hot lubricant through dies 4 that form the bottoms of cooling baths 16, which are clamped to a tube 12 reciprocated by a cam to facilitate winding. The dies are held in position by spring-pressed members 17, and cooling liquid is supplied to the baths from the tube through an aperture controlled by a screw 14. When previous beating is not required the wire may be lubricated by the cooling liquid prior to drawing, the liquid being supplied to a rod 20. The pulley 3 is driven by a belt which is tensioned by a roller 5 carried by a holder rotatably mounted on a bearing and operated by a handle 7. The holder is normally pressed by a spring against the side of the pulley so as to hold it stationary, but is moved away therefrom, when the handle is operated, by a screw carried thereby engaging a helical slot in the upper end of the member 1.
