Word - building and like cards.-To provide a game which at the same time will teach spelling, addition, sub. traction, and multiplication, a deck of 144 cards, divided into 5 sets, is employed. Four of the sets contain 26 cards and the remaining sets 40 cards. Each card is lettered alphabetically and numbered consecutively. On the same face as the letter, Fig. 1, the picture of an animal, e.g., a horse appears, the initial letter of the name of the animal corresponding to the letter on the card. The reverse face of the card, Fig. 2, is numbered consecutively in groups of 1 to 12 and is provided with a portion of one of the multiplication tables, top tables running consecutively from table 1 to table 12, throughout the entire deck. Fig. 6 shows the arrangement of the cards for teaching addition and subtraction, the set chosen being the cards with the 2-times table thereon. A card having a 2 on its lower half isslipped beneath each of the cards separately. It is intended that the even numbers be printed in a colour different from the odd numbers, and, when placed as shown, the sum of the extra card and the one that the extra card is beneath is found by glancing at the differently coloured card to the left. The lettered sides of the cards can also be placed upwardly and the cards grouped to spell different words. To teach subtraction, the arrangement shown in Fig. 5<a> may be employed. To subtract any one of the large numbers in the lower row from the numbers in the upper row, as many spaces are counted towards the left of the upper number, beginning with the first to the left of the upper number, as is equal to the number represented on the lower card which is subtracted.
