Abstract

161,822. Johnson, J. Y., (Fischlein, F. W.). March 26, 1920. Strainer separators; driving.-A strainer separator particularly for treating sugar juice, comprises one or more funnel-shaped screens 9, 10, 11 carried by a shaft 5, to which the mixture is introduced and on to which it is deflected by a deflector 32. The solid material is held by the screen and a second deflector 33 which serves to divert the bulk of the juice through the screen. The solids pass away by the conical pieces 14 to the next screen or to the outlet 35, which is protected against entrance of separated liquid by the deflector 45. The liquid passes through the outlet 40. The separator shown in Fig. 1 comprises three screens 9, 10, 11 of increasing fineness, and these may be of perforated plate or any other form. They are supported on rings 12 carried by rods 13 and are connected to the shaft by means of the conical members 14, 14a, 14b, 33 and adjustable rods 50. The shaft 5 is driven by a turbine-wheel comprising arms 26 and a plate 25 with buckets 28 to which the mixture to be separated is supplied under head or pressure by a conduit 21. The liquid escapes from the buckets by way of apertures 29 in the plate 25 and also flows from the outer edge of the plate against the casing 20. The extension 30 ensures that all the liquid is passed to the separators. Steam-jets 46 are fitted for cleaning the screens.
