Description

(54) GUN FOR EXTRUDING SEALANT (71) We, TORAY SILICONE COMPANY LTD., of 2-8 Muromachi, Nihonbashi, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, Japan, a corporation organized under the laws of Japan, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to an extrusion gun for sealing compounds.
One-component or two-component sealing compounds are used for filling and sealing various joints in buildings, automobiles, ships, airplanes, machinery and instruments and a myriad of other uses. For the convenience of the users, one-component sealing compounds are usually marketed by packaging them in tubes such as lightweight aluminium or water-impermeable cardboard composite tubes or containers. The tubes and containers are usually of the shape to fit conventional extrusion guns wherein, after the sealing compound has been used, the tube or container is discarded and the extrusion gun is refitted with a new cartridge or tube. An improvement in the extrusion of sealants came about when manufacturers started producing sealing compounds in socalled "sausages". These sausages are lightweight film sacks or pouches which are filled with the sealant. They are introduced into the tubes or cylinders of sealant extrusion guns and the forward end of the sack is punctured whereupon the sealant can be extruded through the gun nozzle.
Heretofore, the nozzle of such guns has been an integral part of the gun and, whenever one desired to change to another colour of sealant, it was necessary to remove the sealant sack, to solvent wash the nozzle, and to reassemble the gun.
It therefore becomes a major advantage if the nozzle used for extruding the sealant can be removed and solvent washed later or can simply be discarded since sealing compounds are required to have various colours such as yellow, gray, black, etc. which will match the colours of the portions where they are to be applied.
In addition, when an application requires a different sized nozzle, for example, filling a very wide joint, the nozzle needs to be readily removed and replaced and on most current sealant extrusion apparati, this is not possible.
Thus, this inventive device was developed to overcome the faults of the previous devices.
This invention deals with an improved sealing compound extrusion gun for use with a sealing compound package.
This inventive device, specifically for onecomponent sealing compounds, prevents the soiling of the inside of the main body of the extrusion gun by fitting an exchangeable flexible shield cap with a nozzle into the inside surface of the cylindrical barrel, and then surmounting the shield cap with a retainer cap that can be readily removed.
The retainer cap has a centered aperture through which the nozzle of the flexible shield cap projects.
This device which eliminates the problems mentioned above deals with the structure of the gun itself and the package of the sealing compound. By fitting a flexible, exchangeable shield cap which has a flexible nozzle already built into it, into the inside surface of the barrel and retainer cap, soiling due to the sealing compounds, especially when different colours are used consecutively, is eliminated. Since the retainer cap is easily removed from the barrel and, since the flexible shield cap is easily removed and replaced by a clean flexible shield cap, the operator can use many different coloured sealants without moving from his work area. This is especially advantageous if the workman is working on scaffolding in an elevated work area. In addition, since the nozzle is build into the exchangeable, flexible shield cap, the workman can change the shield cap in order to change the size of the nozzle he is working with. for example, use a shield cap which has a wider nozzle for filling wider joints. The workman can then remove the wide nozzle and replace it with a standard size.
Although the shield cap is re-usable after being washed, it is desirable also that these caps be disposable and with the proper selection of material out of which the cap is made, they can be of the disposable variety.
Thus, the shield cap can be made of cardboard which is inexpensive and easy to dispose. The shield cap can also be made from any available flexible material provided it does not react with, or stain, the sealing compound. It is therefore contemplated within the scope of this invention to include such things as paper, plastics, rubber and composite materials in the manufacture of the shield cap.
There are no special restrictions on the shape or length of the nozzle of the shield cap provided its inside diameter decreases toward the forward end so that the nozzle can be used on any joint width. Useful shapes are conical, trigonal pyramidal, tetragonal pyramidal and the like.
The one-component sealing compounds useful in this invention may be of two types, namely, those which cure as a result of chemical reaction and those which harden as a result of the physical process of volatilization of the solvent contained therein. Examples of the first type are silicone sealants and polyurethanes. Examples of the latter type are butyl rubber sealants and acrylate sealants.
All of these materials are flowable and are contained in tubes or cartridges. For use with the extrusion gun of this invention, however, the sealants are contained in flexible, thin film sacks or pouches which are placed in the cylindrical barrels of the extrusion guns.
When the shield cap and retainer cap are in place, the nozzle of the shield cap projects out of a center opening of the retainer cap. In use, the nozzle is clipped or cut at the appropriate place to give the appropriatesized extrusion orifice. A probe or rod is then pushed down the nozzle to puncture the thin film sack of sealing compound and, when the extrusion means of the extrusion gun is activated, the sealant is extruded from the nozzle.
The invention, therefore, consists in an improved sealant extrusion gun which comprises a cylindrical barrel fitted on one end with a conventional extrusion means comprising a plunger, spring, rod and trigger.
The improvement comprises fitting the opposite end of the cylindrical barrel with a flexible shield cap with an openable nozzle and a retainer cap having a centered opening such that the flexible shield cap with nozzle is fitted to, and maintained partly inside, the cylindrical barrel to shield an end part of the inside wall thereof, and is surmounted by the retainer cap. The retainer cap is secured to the cylindrical barrel so as to hold both the flexible shield cap with nozzle and the retainer cap in place, whereby the nozzle of the flexible shield cap projects through the centered opening of the retainer cap in a direction opposite to that of the extrusion means and allows extrusion of the sealing compound when the nozzle of the flexible shield cap is opened and the extrusion means is activated.
Reference will now be made to the drawings so that a detailed explanation of the invention can be used to show those skilled in the art the benefits of the instant invention.
Figure 1 is a side view of a one-component type sealing compound packaged in the shape of a sausage.
Figure 2 is a view of the longitudinal crosssection of an extruding gun after the onecomponent type sealing compound packaged in a sausage shape is loaded into the gun.
Figure 3 shows a partial longitudinal cross-section of an example of the shield cap based on this device together with the improved retainer cap.
Figure 4 is a partial longitudinal crosssection of the shield cap and the retainer cap when they are assembled into a body.
The actual configuration of the sack or pouch of Figure 1 is immaterial provided it fits the cylindrical barrel of the extrusion gun. The preferred configuration is as shown in the figure, that is, the "sausage" shape with an outer film 1 and a packed sealing compound 2.
Figure 2 is a gun presently in use for extruding sausage-shaped material. It comprises a retainer cap 3, a cylinder 4, a plunger 5, a spring 6, a rod 7, which is connected to the plunger 5, and a trigger 8. In this mechanism, the pulling of the trigger 8 advances the plunger 5. The retainer cap 3 can be threadedly attached to the barrel 4 and thereby can be easily attached to, and detached from the cylinder 4 by one turn with the use of a gripping tool. The procedure in the use of this gun consists in removing the retainer cap 3, pulling out of the rod 7, loading a sealing compound package of the shape illustrated in Figure 1 into the cylinder, replacing the retainer cap 3, broaching a hole in the sealing skin with a probe inserted through the nozzle hole and repeatedly pulling on the trigger 8, which advances the plunger 5 and thus causes the extrusion of the sealing compound.
However, when sealing compounds of different colour hues are successively used with this gun, soiling of the sealing compounds results, and the appearance of the finished work is impaired. For this reason, at present, the gun is always washed before a sealing compound of a different colour is to be used. In addition, depending on the joint width of the work, often, the gun cannot be used because the joint width and the inside diameter of the retainer cap 3 do not agree with each otheL Figure 3 shows the inventive portion of the device. The figure, a partial diagram illustrating the idea of this device, shows a section which consists of a retainer cap 3, having a centered opening 10, which is obtained by cutting off part of the nozzle section of the retainer cap, and a flexible shield cap 9.
The shape of the nozzle of the shield cap 9 is not specifically restricted provided its inside diameter is tapered towards the forward end so that it can be used on any joint width. In this figure, for example, a nozzle with a conical shape is shown.
Figure 4 shows a retainer cap 3 and shield cap 9 in one unit body. The shape of the shield cap 9 is similar to that of the inside surface of the retainer cap 3 except at the nozzle part. The insertion of the shield cap 9 against the inside surface of the retainer cap 3 and its manner of fitting into the main body of the gun prevent the inside surface of the retainer cap from being soiled. This is because an end part of the inside wall of the barrel is shielded by that part of the shield cap which is maintained inside the barrel. In addition, by cutting off the nozzle part of the shield cap to a suitable length, fitting and adjusting to various joint widths is made possible. As stated before, an acceptable material for the shield cap may be selected from cardboard, plastics, rubber, composite materials, etc. In the use of the gun, by exchanging the shield cap, application to any joint width is made possible. In addition, with this device, sealing compounds of different colour hues or different character can .be used successively without the need to wash the gun. Thus, the loss in time and economic losses with regard to solvent, etc., which are caused by washing, can be remarkably lessened.
While the above description illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that within the scope of the appended claims the invention can be practised otherwise than as specifically described.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A sealant extrusion gun having a cylindrical barrel fitted on one end with a conventional extrusion means comprising a trigger activated plunger, a flexible shield cap provided with an openable nozzle and a retainer cap being fitted to the opposite end of the cylindrical barrel, the retainer cap being removably attached to said barrel and provided with a centered opening, being arranged so that the flexible shield cap with nozzle is maintained partly inside the cylindrical barrel to shield an end part of the inside wall thereof and surmounted by the retainer cap, and being secured to the cylindrical barrel in such manner that both the flexible shield cap with its nozzle and the retainer cap itself are held in place and that the nozzle of the flexible shield cap projects through the centered opening of the retainer cap in a direction opposite to the extrusion means and allows extrusion of the sealing compound when the nozzle is opened and the extrusion means is activated.
2. A sealant extrusion gun according to claim 1 wherein the flexible shield cap with nozzle is manufactured from a material selected from cardboard, plastics, rubber and composite materials.
3. A sealant extrusion gun according to claim 1 substantially as herein described with reference to Figs. 1 to 4 of the accompanying drawings.

Claims (3)

The figure, a partial diagram illustrating the idea of this device, shows a section which consists of a retainer cap 3, having a centered opening 10, which is obtained by cutting off part of the nozzle section of the retainer cap, and a flexible shield cap 9. The shape of the nozzle of the shield cap 9 is not specifically restricted provided its inside diameter is tapered towards the forward end so that it can be used on any joint width. In this figure, for example, a nozzle with a conical shape is shown. Figure 4 shows a retainer cap 3 and shield cap 9 in one unit body. The shape of the shield cap 9 is similar to that of the inside surface of the retainer cap 3 except at the nozzle part. The insertion of the shield cap 9 against the inside surface of the retainer cap 3 and its manner of fitting into the main body of the gun prevent the inside surface of the retainer cap from being soiled. This is because an end part of the inside wall of the barrel is shielded by that part of the shield cap which is maintained inside the barrel. In addition, by cutting off the nozzle part of the shield cap to a suitable length, fitting and adjusting to various joint widths is made possible. As stated before, an acceptable material for the shield cap may be selected from cardboard, plastics, rubber, composite materials, etc. In the use of the gun, by exchanging the shield cap, application to any joint width is made possible. In addition, with this device, sealing compounds of different colour hues or different character can .be used successively without the need to wash the gun. Thus, the loss in time and economic losses with regard to solvent, etc., which are caused by washing, can be remarkably lessened. While the above description illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that within the scope of the appended claims the invention can be practised otherwise than as specifically described. WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. A sealant extrusion gun having a cylindrical barrel fitted on one end with a conventional extrusion means comprising a trigger activated plunger, a flexible shield cap provided with an openable nozzle and a retainer cap being fitted to the opposite end of the cylindrical barrel, the retainer cap being removably attached to said barrel and provided with a centered opening, being arranged so that the flexible shield cap with nozzle is maintained partly inside the cylindrical barrel to shield an end part of the inside wall thereof and surmounted by the retainer cap, and being secured to the cylindrical barrel in such manner that both the flexible shield cap with its nozzle and the retainer cap itself are held in place and that the nozzle of the flexible shield cap projects through the centered opening of the retainer cap in a direction opposite to the extrusion means and allows extrusion of the sealing compound when the nozzle is opened and the extrusion means is activated.
2. A sealant extrusion gun according to claim 1 wherein the flexible shield cap with nozzle is manufactured from a material selected from cardboard, plastics, rubber and composite materials.
3. A sealant extrusion gun according to claim 1 substantially as herein described with reference to Figs. 1 to 4 of the accompanying drawings.
