Description

(54) "ABUTMENT APPARATUS" (71) We,RATCLlFF TAIL IIFTS INVITED, (formerly John Ratcliff (Tail Lifts) Limited) a British Company, of Bessemer Road, Welwyn Garden City, Herfortshire, AL7 1ET, and MICHAEL ASHCROFT BUZZARD, a British Subject, of 39 Sollershott East, Letchworth, Hertforshire, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in an by the following statement: The invention relates to abutment apparatus.
According to the invention there is provided abutment apparatus comprising a support member, a non-resilient abutment element and an annular interference element, the support member having a hole formed therein and the element comprising a cylindrical shank and a head, the shank being engaged in the hole with the interference element engaged between the shank and the surface of the support member defining the hole.
The shank, or alternatively the surface of the support member defining the hole, may have an annular groove formed therein, the interference element being located in the groove to provide an interference fit between the shank and the surface of the support element defining the hole.
The interference element may be a corrugated annular element or an O-ring.
Spacer means may be positioned between the support member and the head of the abutment element.
The spacer means preferably comprises one or more washers.
The head may be cylindrical.
The invention further provides vehicle load lifting and lowering apparatus comprising abutment apparatus according to the invention.
The invention further provides a method of assembling abutment apparatus according to the invention comprising the steps of inserting the shank into the hole in the support member with the interference element between the shank of the abutment element and the surface of the support member defining the hole to provide an interference fit therebetween.
By way of example, one embodiment of abutment apparatus and a method of assembling the apparatus according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side view of an abutment element; Figure 2 is an end view of an abutment element; Figure 3 is a side view of an abutment assembly; and Figure 4 is a side view of a platform hinge assembly for a vehicle tail life to illustrate a use of an abutment assembly.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2, an abutment element 10 of metal comprises a cylindrical shank 11 and ahead 12.The shank 11 is formed with a portion 13 of reduced diameter.
A corrugated annular metal element 14 is arranged around the portion 13 of reduced diameter so that when the shank 11 is inserted in a hole in a support member, the corrugated element provides an interference fit between the shank and the member. The annular element is preferably of stainless steel or spring steel, and may conveniently be an element known by the name "star tolerance ring".
The head 12 provides an abutment against a member 16 standing proud of the surface of a support member 15 to which the element is secured by interference fit. The axial position of the element 10 is adjustable by placing a desired number of washers 17 around the shank 11 between the head 12 and the member 15. In the example shown in Figure 3, the number of washers is three.
A particularly advantageous use of an abutment apparatus according to the invention is in a platform hinge assembly as shown in Figure 4 for a vehicle tail lift of the kind comprising a pair of spaced apart, parallel, upright rigid guide members and a platform supported on runners movable up and down the guide members.
The hinge assembly comprises a platform support 20 member 18 hingedly mounted on a support member 19 which is movable up and down a guide member as the platform is raised and lowered. A movable locking device 20 is provided on the support member.
The assembly has three abutment elements; a first abutment element 21 secured as hereinbefore described to the platform support mem ber 18, a second abutment element 22 adjacent the base of the locking member 20 and a third abutment element 23 adjacent the top of the locking member 20.
With the platform in a load carrying position as shown, the first abutment element 21 abuts a part 24 of the support member, and by altering the number of washers 17 between the head of the element and the platform support member the load carrying position of the platform may be altered.
When the platform is in an upright position, the platform support member 18 abuts the third abutment element 23, and the upright position of the platform may be altered by altering the number of washers 17 between the head of the abutment element 23 and the surface of the locking member.
While in this embodiment of the invention a portion of reduced diameter is formed on the shank of the abutment element for locating the corrugated element, it will be appreciated that alternatively an annular groove may be formed in the surface of the support member defining the hole to locate the corrugated element. The corrugated element may be replaced by an Oring, or indeed the shank of the abutment element may engage directly with the surface of the support member defining the hole.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. Abutment apparatus comprising a support member, a non-resilient abutment element and an annular interference element, the support member having a hole formed therein and the abutment element comprising a cylindrical shank and a head, the shank being engaged in the hole with the interference element engaged between the shank and the surface of the support member defining the hole.
2. Abutment apparatus as claimed in Claim 1 in which the shank has an annular groove formed therein, the interference element being located in the groove to provide an interference fit between the shank and the surface of the support member defining the hole.
3. Abutment apparatus as claimed in Claim 1 in which the surface of the support member defining the hole is formed with an annular groove, the interference element being located in the groove to provide an interference fit between the shank and the surface of the support member defining the hole.
4. Abutment apparatus as claimed in Claim 2 or Claim 3 in which the interference element is a corrugated annular element.
5. Abutment apparatus as claimed in Claim 2 or Claim 3 in which the interference element is an O-ring.
6. Abutment apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim comprising spacer means positioned between the support member and the head of the abutment element.
7. Abutment apparatus as claimed in Claim 6 wherein the spacer means comprise one or more washers.
8. Abutment apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim in which the head is cylindrical.
9. A method of assembling abutment apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim comprising the steps of inserting the shank into the hole in the support member with the interference element between the shank of the abutment element and the surface of the support member defining the hole to provide an interference fit therebetween.
10. Abutment apparatus substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown on the accompanying drawings.
11. A method of assembling abutment apparatus substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
12. Vehicle load lifting and lowering apparatus comprising abutment apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 8 or Claim 10.
