Description
(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO THE
MANUFACTURE OF ENVELOPES
(71) We, MOORE BUSINESS FORMS
LIMITED, a British company, of 75/79,
Southwark Street, London SUE 1 OHY, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to an improved method of manufacture envelopes from continuous forms webs.
In the prior art various methods have been used to produce envelopes from continuous forms. One of such methods includes the folding of one unit form, the back and back faces or the front and front faces of each form part being folded and secured together by adhesive in order to produce an envelope from one of the continuous forms webs. This method cause an inconvenience that the information on the pre-printed form is either exposed wholly on the exterior or enclosed in the interior of the envelope. For this reason, the former method allows no use in the application where it is undesirable that the information contents of the envelope are known by others.
Furthermore according to another conventional method, an envelope is comprised of two upper and lower sheets and printed only on its lower sheet through the upper sheet thereof by a selective transfer layer between the sheets for the purpose of keeping the privacy of the information or contents.
It is an objection of the present invention to remove such defects of the conventional methods by providing an improved method of manufacturing envelopes from continuous forms webs processing the continuous forms into continuous envelopes so that the addresses, information, which require easy observation are all exposed on the exterior for easy observation and those that are undesirable to be seen by others for example the contents of a pay envelope are entirely shielded within the envelope.
According to the present invention a method of manufacturing envelopes from a continuous forms web divided longitudinally into two side by side parts and having adhesive applied to the front face of one said part and the back face of the other said part and perforated lines provided at selected portions of the web allowing the eventual envelopes to be opened, the method comprising feeding the web in its longitudinal direction separating the two said parts of the continuous forms web, overlapping the separated web parts so that the front face of one of the separated parts faces the back face of the other separated part and so that areas of adhesive on said one part are in register with corresponding areas of adhesive on the other part joining the overlapped parts into envelopes by the adhesive and separating the continuous joined parts into individual envelopes.
The manufacturing method of the present invention will be explained with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is an explanatory view showing schematically the process embodying a method of manufacturing a continuous forms web into envelopes according to the present invention,
Fig. 2 shows a fragmentary top view of the continuous forms web of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 shows an explanatory view of the continuous forms web of Fig. 1 in which the continuous forms web is slit at the middle of the web and the two halves slit are overlapped together, in the process of manufacturing the continuous forms web into envelopes,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of an adhered envelope with both of its sides removed,
Figs. 5 to 8 are explanation views of an envelope with self-sealing function and,
Figs. 9 and 10 are front and back views of part of a modified web.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown in Fig. 2 a length of a single web of continuous forms 1 in which the forms are provided with transverse lines of perforations which are arranged between each form thereof and are used to detach the continuous forms into separate form or envelope units. The continuous forms 1 are further provided with marginal punched holes 10 at both sides thereof and with longitudinal lines 3 of perforations intended for easy opening of envelopes at the selected portions. On longitudinally extending parts 5, 6 of the continuous forms web I areas of heat seal adhesive 2, that is adhesive which will not effect adhesive action at normal room temperatures and under normal pressures but which will have adhesive properties when heated, are applied to selected portions of the back and front faces thereof, respectively. In a modification, pressure sensitive adhesive may be applied instead of a heat seal adhesive. Furthermore, the desired indicia, description, information, are pre-printed on the front and if necessary on the back face of each form unit in the continuous forms 1 by means of a suitable printing and an inking device.
Fig. 6 shows the rear of the a single form length of a continuous forms web with areas of heat seal adhesive corresponding to the areas of heat seal adhesive on the front of the form web, so that the areas of adhesive will come into register with one another, As shown the areas on the front and back of the forms web each comprise a longitudinally extending block and transverse blocks on both sides of each transverse line of tear off perforations 9.
In order to manufacture continuous forms 1 into envelopes the above continuous forms web 1 is slit longitudinally into two separate longitudinal web parts 5 and 6 by a first slitter 4 (several slitters if desired) placed at the middle of the forms 1 along the longitudinal feeding directions of the forms web and shown by an arrow (join Fig. 2.
The two parts 5 and 6 which are slit and separated are guided so that the part 5 to be positioned as an upper sheet is overlapped with the part 6 to be positioned as a lower sheet when the parts are overlapped, as shown at Fig. 3. The corresponding parts of the forms web are arranged so that the transverse lines of perforations 9 are in alignment and the lines of adhesive 2 on the front of one web part 6 are in register with the lines of adhesive 2 at the back of the other web part 5.
Thereafter heat is applied to the overlapped portions 2 where adhesive has been applied in the previous step in order to joint the portions together to manufacture envelopes.
Such adhered envelopes are severed at unnecessary portions 11 at the both sides thereof and are detached from the perforated lines 9 for each form envelope into separate final envelopes, as shown in Fig. 4.
Also, for guide means of the continuous forms 1, known conventional art may be applied. For example, feed tractors for engagement with the marginal punch holes 10 shich serve to guide the continuous forms may be provided at positions suitable to guide the forms.
As an alternative, after the upper part 5 and the lower part 6 are overlapped together, heat is applied to the above overlapped parts to join the adhesive applied portions 2 together and the unnecessary portions 11 are severed at the both sides of the continuous forms thereby to obtain envelope webs, and the envelope webs are detached from the perforated lines 9 thereof for each form unit into individual envelopes.
Accordingly, envelopes with construction as described above may be suitable for use in correspondence envelopes, since the front side of the lower half part 6 is shielded within the envelope (i) which contains printed information, communication contents, etc.
that is preferable to avoid an observation by others, on the other hand, the front side of the upper half part 5 is exposed outside of the envelope (i) which contains printed address, addresser, etc. that requires easy observation, as has been described above. Therefore, envelopes manufactured according to the present invention will find advantageous use as a payment notice, payments certification paper, deposit paper or the like.
As another embodiment of the invention, in order to allow the sealing of the final envelope after inserting some document and paper into a final envelope, a suitable adhesive-backed tape 13 with a suitable known water repellent paper 12 as shown in Fig. 5 is adhered on a side edge portion of a half part 7 of the envelope form with the repellent paper 12 up as shown in Fig. 6, the suitable adhesive-backed tape 13 with the suitable known water repellent paper 12 is arranged as shown in Fig. 7 so as to project externally from an opening 14 of a half part 8 of the envelope form when the envelope form is manufactured into a final envelope, whereby the water repellent paper 12 is removed from the adhesive-backed tape 13 as shown in Fig.
8 after the document and paper are inserted into the envelope through the opening 14 in order to seal the envelope opening 14 by folding the half part 7 so as to attach the part 7 to the counterpart 8. Such type of envelope may be used as a pay envelope.
Also, as shown in Figs. 9 and 10, the areas of adhesive 2 on the front part of the forms web may be offset so that when the continuous forms web is folded about the transverse cross perforation lines 9, the areas of adhesive in the front of the web will not contact one another and there will be no reasonable chance of the form sticking together. Also the areas of adhesive on the rear of the form are offset so that when folded they will not adhere together but, on the other hand, when the front and back parts when such are collated, the areas of adhesive will be in register and can be adhered together.
As shown in Figs. 9 and 10 the adhesive on each side of the web is in each envelope length arranged in two area portions. Each area portion has a line of adhesive 2 adjacent and parallel to the transverse line of tear off perforations 9 and longitudinal portions (2L) at each end of the transverse line parallel to the complementary portion. The longitudinal portions (2L) extend from adjacent lines of tear off perforations towards each other but offset from each other and the longitudinal portions of one sheet are offset from the longitudinal portions (2L) in the adjacent envelope portions, so that the adhesive portions do not overlap when the webs are folded about the lines 9 of transverse tear off perforations.Nevertheless, the lines of the adhesive portions are so arranged that the areas on the front of the rear sheet are in register with the corresponding areas on the back of the front sheet when the two separated parts are registered together.
