Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN THE MANUFACTURE OF REINFORCED FABRICS (71) We, FOTHERGILL AND HARVEY LIMPED, Summit, Littleborough, County of Lancaster; do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to improvements in fabrics for use as a waterproof membrane or cover for buildings such as sports stadia, gymnasiums, swimming pools and warehouses.
One of the problems in designing this type of structure is the attachment of support cables to the fabric.
It has been proposed to thread a support cable through a loop at the edge of the fabric.
However continuous abrasion of the cable retaining loop by the cable may lead to eventual fabric failure. Therefore, some means of making the cable an integral part of the structure is necessary and an additional advantage of so doing is that it makes it possible to tension the structure by pulling only on the cables instead of the cable and fabric separately.
The fabric may be of woven glass-fibre and it may be precoated with silicone or precoated with silicone in combination with fluoro ethylene propylene (F.E.P.) or poly tetrafluorowethylene (p.t.f.e) fillers such as silica may also be added to-the coatings before being subjected to the method of the invention.
According to the invention a method of reinforcing fabrics in sheet form comprises coating the fabric sheet with a fluoro polymer, forming a loop in the sheet or in a fluoro polymer coated strip bonded thereto and inserting a single or multi standed polytetrafluoroethylene or fluoroethylene propylene coated cable into the loop and bonding the cable to the fabric sheet.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings:- Figure 1 is-a perspective view of a coated fabric with a cable loop bonded thereto; Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 Figure 1; Figure 3 is a perspective view of a further form of the invention.
Figure 4 is a section on line 44 Figure 3.
A cable A is coated with polytetrafluoroethylene (p.t.f.e) or fluoroethylene (F.E.P.) by extrusion or by winding a p.t.f.e. tape thereon and is threaded through a loop or hem formed along the edges of p.t.f.e. or f.e.p. coated glass or fibre glass fabric forming a stressed membrane for covering buildings or other structures.
The cable may be enclosed as shown in Figures 1 and 2 in a strip in the form of fluoropolymer coated fabric such as f.e.p. or p.t.f.e. the edges of which are bonded one on each side of the edge of the fabric strip 1. Alternatively the loop 2 along the edges of the coated fabric may be formed from the fabric folded over on itself and bonded.
Support of the covering may also be achieves at or away from the edges by the method showr on Figure 3 and 4. In this case, the cable may be enclosed in a strip in the form of a loop 2 of fluoropolymer or p.t.f.e. coated fabric bonded to the same side of the fabric.
Alternatively, if at the edge or edges of the fabric, the loop 2 may be formed from the coated sheet of fabric folded over on itself and bonded.
The cable A may be single or multi-stranded and in both cases, the strand or strands are enclosed in a coating of fluoropolymer. Figures 1-4 show multi-strand cables. However, the support is equally applicable to single strand cables. In Figures 1 and 2, the loop 2 encloses the coated cable A with the edges of the loop bonded on each side of the fabric 1 and also to the cable coating 3. In Figures 3 and 4 the coated cable A is enclosed by the loop 2 and the fabric 1 with the loop bonded to one side of the fabric 1.
The fabric sheet is always coated with a fluoropolymer irrespective of whether it alone or the strip attached thereto forms the loop.
The cable coating 3 is bonded to the loop 2 and the fabric 1.
The coated cable A is threaded through the cable retaining loop 2 of the fabric and by heating the polymer coating on the cable A and the fabric 1 simultaneously, the loop and the cable coating are bonded to the fabric.
A filler of silicone may be incorporated in the fluoropolymer coating applied to the fabric or the fabric may be pretreated with silicone.
Heat is applied to bond the loop 2 to the fabric 1 and the cable coating 3 by a hot air blower or by heated pliers shaped to the fabric/ cable diameter. By this means the cable is welded continuously or intermittently along its length making it an integral part of the fabric to prevent abrasion between the fabric and the cable. Tension may be applied to the cable, to anchor the reinforced sheet on a building.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A method of reinforcing fabrics in sheet form comprising coating the fabric sheet with fluoropolymer, forming a loop in the sheet or in a fluoropolymer-coated strip bonded thereto and inserting a single or multi-stranded polytetrafluoroethylene or fluoroethylene propylene coated cable into the loop and bonding the cable to the fabric sheet.
2. A reinforced fabric comprising a fluoropolymer coated sheet bonded between the edges of a strip of fluoropolymer coated material forming a loop, or the fluoropolymer coated sheet may be bent on itself to form the loop with one end bonded to the sheet, or a separate fluoro-polymer coated strip forms a loop with the sides of strip bonded to the same side of the coated sheet, and a single or multistranded polytetrafluoroethylene or fluoroethylene propylene coated cable enclosed within the loop and bonded to the sheet.
3. A coated fabric as in claim 2 in which the cable is enclosed in a strip in the form of a loop of polytetrafluoroethylene or fluoroethylene propylene coated fabric, and precoat of silicone, the edges of which are bonded one on each side of the edge of coated fabric.
4. A method of reinforcing a polymeric fabric in the form of sheets substantially as hereinbefore described.
5. A reinforced polymeric fabric in the form of sheets substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
**WARNING** end of DESC field may overlap start of CLMS **.
