Description
(54) IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO FIRE RESISTANT
MATERIAL
(71) I RONALD POWELL, a British
Subject, of Marlston Heyes Farm, Wrexham
Road, Chester, CH4 9DE do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
the present invention relates to a fire resistant material for use in the manufacture of douvets, eiderdowns, blankets, mattresses or articles of clothing, or for use in upholstering articles e.g. any form of seat
Ing.
Material used to manufacture, for example, douvets and night apparel quite often has a quilted form, the material comprising two layers between which a heat insulating filling material is located, the filling material being evenly dispersed and retained in position by the material being quilted i.e. the two layers are stitched or bonded together in various patterns e.g. a diamond or any other pattern. This material is frequently of a highly inflammable nature, and if not highly inflammable is liable to smoulder and emit toxic fumes for considerable periods of time if subjected to high temperatures. This is especially true of the usual type of filling material. Such material therefore constitutes a considerable fire hazard and a possible danger to life.
The aim of the present invention is to provide a material suitable for use in, for example, douvets and nightaparel, mattresses, upholstery etc. which wilt be capable of withstanding extremely high temperatures thus obviating or minimising the danger of becoming accidentally ignited and/or emitting toxic or noxious fumes.
According to the present invention there is provided a quilted material comprising two outer layers, a filling material being sandwiched between said material layers, the filling material comprising ceramic fibres.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention the material is quilted by stitching together the two outer material layers in any desired pattern e.g. a diamond or other formation, this quilted form retaining the ceramic fibre evenly dispersed. Alternatively, the outer material layers may be buttoned together to form the quilt, or if the outer material layers are of a suitable material, the outer material layers may be bonded or welded together. Preferably the outer material layers are of a non-flammable or flame resistant nature. To form the quilt preferably fire resistant thread or metallic buttons or staples are used.
The ceramic fibres may be arranged in random orientated, felt-like, blanket or cot- ton-wool-like form and are usually blown alumino - silicate fibres manufactured from
China clay.
One example of the present invention comprises two outer material layers of noninflammable material between which a filling of ceramic fibres is located with the fibres in random orientation. The outer material layers are stitched together in a square design to produce a quilted form for the material. The resultant material can be used in douvets, or other forms of bedding, upholstery, or clothing, reducing the fire hazard risk. The material can be particularly advantageously used in the manufacture of fire resistant suits suitable, for example, for fire fighting, or protection in furnace work.
Whilst the above makes reference to a filling solely of ceramic fibres, the filling can, within the scope of the present invention, be comprised of ceramic fibres plus any other desired, preferably non-inflammable or flame resistant, material.
Further fire resistant constructions are disclosed in my British Patent Specification No. 1,294,646.
WHAT I CLAIM IS:
1. A quilted material comprising two outer material layers, a filling material being sandwiched between said material layers, the filling material comprising ceramic fibres.
2. A material as claimed in claim 1, in which the material is quilted in any desired pattern.
3. A material as claimed in claim 2, in which fire resistant thread is utilised to pro

Claims (15)
1. A quilted material comprising two outer material layers, a filling material being sandwiched between said material layers, the filling material comprising ceramic fibres.
2. A material as claimed in claim 1, in which the material is quilted in any desired pattern.
3. A material as claimed in claim 2, in which fire resistant thread is utilised to pro duce the quilt pattern, the thread stitching the two outer layers together.
4. A material as claimed in claim 2, in which the quilt is formed by utilising metallic buttons or staples to join the outer layers together in the desired pattern.
5. A material as claimed in claim 2, in which the quilt is formed by bonding or welding the outer material layers together.
6. A material as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which the outer material layers are of non-flammable or fire resistant nature.
7. A material as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, in which the ceramic fibres are blown alumino-silicate fibres manufactured from China clay.
8. A material as claimed in any one ot the preceding claims, in which the ceramic fibres are arranged in random orientation, felt-like, blanket or cotton wool form.
9. A material as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, in which the filling material comprises ceramic fibres mixed with further material.
10. A material as claimed in claim 9, in which the further material is noninflammable or flame resistant.
11. A quilted material substantially as hereinbefore described.
12. A douvet when made from quilted material as claimed in any one of the preceding claims.
13. A fire-fighting suit made from quilted material as claimed in any one of claims I to 11.
14. Upholstery made from quilted material as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 11.
15. A fire resistant suit suitable for use in blast furnace and iron works, made from quilted material as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 11.
