Abstract

Coating-machines.-In a machine for applying a filling-composition to flooring and like timber, the boards are passed on edge through the machine between upper and lower guides 3, 4 and are treated successively by rotary brushes 54 which clean them, a device 63 for applying the filler, a set of stationary wiping-blades 101 and a set of transversely-acting wipers carried on a rotating disc 114 which rub in the filler and remove the surplus thereof. The guides 3, 4 are tongued and grooved to correspond with the edges of the boards treated, which are led between them by a flared mouth 5. A pair of feed-rollers 7 are carried by arms 11 pivoted on shafts 14 from which they are driven by gear-wheels 20; the arms 11 are actuated by levers, under the action of an adjustably weighted lever 39. to press the feedrollers into contact with the boards, and a handlever 41 enables the lever 39 to be raised to stop the feed. The cleaning-brushes 54 are rotated from the shafts 14 by bolts 58, and are carried by brackets adjustable in length and adjustably pivoted on the shafts 14. The boards pass in contact with the filler contained in a receptacle 63 as shown in sectional plan in Fig. 8, the receptacles being provided with a side outlet 71 for this purpose. Spring-pressed slides engaging the edges of the boards, and blocks 73 engaging the face of the boards adjacent the outlet 71 prevent leakage of the filler. The blocks 73 are pressed up to the boards by screws 75, 76, the screw 75 being definitely adjusted and the screw 76 being yieldably kept up to the work by a weighted chain 78, Fig. 1, wound on a pulley 77 carried by the screw. Guides 72<1> for the blocks are removable to permit ready removal of the blocks. Filling- material is fed into the receptacle 63 by a hopper 80 and is stirred by a rotary stirrer on a shaft 88, being kept in a liquid condition by a pivoted steam-chest forming the bottom of the receptacle. The transversely acting wipers are formed of leather pieces arranged radially on the disc 114. Notches 6 are formed in the lower guide 4, the tongues between them acting as scrapers to clean the lower edge of the boards.
