Description

(54) LOUDSPEAKER COOLING ARRANGEMENTS (71) We A.R.D. ANSTALT, of P.O.
Box 34.613, 9490 Vaduz, Liechtenstein, a body corporate organised under the laws of Liechtenstein, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- The invention relates to a loudspeaker unit.
Particularly where large power outputs are concerned, considerable heat can be generated in the magnet system of a loudspeaker unit.
The invention accordingly provides a loudspeaker unit comprising an enclosure, a loudspeaker mounted in the enclosure, the loudspeaker having a diaphragm and driving means including a magnet system for driving the diaphragm to radiate sound through an aperture in the enclosure wall, and a cooling device for cooling the magnet system.
In accordance with the invention, the magnet system or structure may be provided with fins for example to enlarge the surface area from which heat can be radiated, but as radiation can normally be effected only into a sealed chamber which may not be of large size, it is preferred to provide a thermally conductive path to the exterior of the enclosure cabinet in which the loudspeaker is mounted.
The invention is further described below by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which is a sectional side view of a loudspeaker unit embodying the invention.
As shown in the drawing a loudspeaker unit comprises a loudspeaker 2 mounted in a cabinet or enclosure 4 so that the loudspeaker diaphragm radiates sound through an aperture in the enclosure wall. The diaphragm is driven by a voice coil co-operating with a magnet system 6. To remove heat from the magnet system 6, a heat conductive path is constituted by a tube 8 with an end opening externally of the enclosure 4 so that external air is in contact with the tube and with the magnet system 6. Preferably however as shown the tube 130 is in contact with the magnet system between its ends, both of which communicate with the cabinet exterior so that heat can be carried away by a flow of air through the tube. One tube end is disposed below the other to promote the air flow.
Instead of the free air circulation of the unit illustrated, forced air circulation could be provided, or air or another cooling fluid could be circulated with a closed system.
It will be evident that the invention can be embodied in a variety of loudspeaker units other than as specifically described within the scope of the invention as defined in the following claims.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A loudspeaker unit comprising an enclosure, a loudspeaker mounted in the enclosure, the loudspeaker having a diaphragm and driving means including a magnet system for driving the diaphragm to radiate sound through an aperture in the enclosure wall, and a cooling device for cooling the magnet system.
2. A loudspeaker unit as claimed in claim 1 wherein the cooling device provides a thermally conductive path to the exterior of the enclosure.
3. A loudspeaker unit as claimed in claim 2 wherein the thermally conductive path comprises a tube with an end opening externally of the enclosure.
4. A loudspeaker unit as claimed in claim 3 wherein the tube has two open ends, each end communicating with the exterior of the enclosure.
5. A loudspeaker unit as claimed in claim 4 wherein one end of the tube is lower than the other.
6. A loudspeaker unit as claimed in claim 3, 4 or 5 wherein the tube is in contact with the magnet system between its ends.
