Description

(54) A LOUD SPEAKER CABINET (71) I, PETER JAMES BIBBY, a British subject of 62 Oakhurst Grove, London, S.E.22 do hereby declare the invention for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a loud speaker cabinet.
More specifically, this invention provides a loud speaker cabinet made of fibre reinforced cement.
The loud speaker cabinet can be made in various shapes and a cylindrical shape is presently preferred.
Advantageously, the fibre reinforced cement is a glass fibre reinforced cement although other reinforcing fibres can be used if desired. The glass fibre can be present in amounts up to, for example, 30% by dry weight. Preferably, the glass fibre is present in amounts of approximately 5% by dry weight. The glass fibres may be zirconia glass fibres, for example those sold under the trade name Cem-Fil.
The cement may be ordinary Portland cement. The cement may also include 5% fine sand.
The surface of the loud speaker cabinet can be produced to be very smooth in the fibre reinforced cement. For aesthetic purposes, the surface can be treated with a paint seal, a varnish or a plastics coating.
Glass flakes in a resin base, for example that sold under the Registered Trade Mark CERAMITE, produces a suitable surface for the loud speaker cabinet.
The loud speaker cabinet may have a mouth which is provided with means for mounting one or more speakers. The speaker mounting means may be a wooden panel, for example a chipboard panel. The loud speaker cabinet may thus include one or more speakers and appropriate electrical circuitry.
The loud speaker cabinet may be made in a mould by spraying the fibre reinforced concrete onto the mould from the inside of the mould. The cabinet can be made as a single unit or it may be easier to form it in two separate parts which are then joined together. When the cabinet is made in two separate parts, it will usually be made in two separate moulds and the join will usually extend longitudinally of the cabinet. The two separate parts, or if desired more than two separate parts, may be joined by spraying more fibre reinforced cement over the join or joins.
The spraying is advantageously effected from a spray gun. This simultaneously and separately sprays chopped fibre rovings and a cement slurry. The two sprays mix together in the air before they contact the mould. Spraying may be continued until the desired cabinet wall thickness has been reached. The sprayed surfaces may be worked, for example with a roller, in order to remove trapped air bubbles.
If desired, the cabinets can be formed using techniques other than spraying. Thus, for example, the cabinets can be formed using suction moulds or pressure injection moulds.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a loud speaker cabinet of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a cylindrical glass fibre reinforced loud speaker cabinet 2. The cabinet 2 has a mouth 4 which is adapted to be bridged by a one inch thick chipboard panel (not shown) which is secured to the glass fibre reinforced cement by screws (not shown). The chipboard panel can then support a loud speaker and any desired associated electrical circuitry.
The cabinet 2 can be made in one piece by spraying into a mould through a front opening which is formed when the two mould parts 6, 8 are joined together. It may, however, be convenient to carry out some of the spraying and working of the glass fibre reinforced material in the mould parts 6, 8 when they are separate from each other and before they are assembled together.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the loud speaker cabinet 2 can be formed in shapes other than cylindrical and by methods other than by spraying.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: 1. A loud speaker cabinet made of fibre reinforced cement.
2. A loud speaker cabinet according to claim 1 and having a cylindrical shape.
3. A loud speaker cabinet according to claim 1 or claim 2 in which the fibre reinforced cement is a glass fibre reinforced cement.
4. A loud speaker cabinet according to claim 3 in which the glass fibre is present in amounts up to 30% by dry weight.
5. A loud speaker cabinet according to claim 4 in which the glass fibre is present in amounts of 5% by dry weight.
6. A loud speaker cabinet according to any one of claims 3 to 5 in which the glass fibres are zirconia glass fibres.
7. A loud speaker cabinet according to any one of the preceding claims in which the cement is Portland cement.
8. A loud speaker cabinet according to any one of the preceding claims in which the cement includes 5% fine sand.
9. A loud speaker cabinet according to any one of the preceding claims in which the surface of the loud speaker cabinet is treated with a paint seal, a varnish or a plastics coating.
10. A loud speaker cabinet according to claim 9 in which the surface of the loud speaker cabinet is treated with glass flakes in a resin base.
11. A loud speaker cabinet according to any one of the preceding claims having a mouth which is provided with means for mounting one or more speakers.
12. A loud speaker cabinet according to claim 11 in which the speaker mounting means is a wooden panel.
13. A loud speaker cabinet according to any one of the preceding claims which is produced in two separate parts which are subsequently joined together.
14. A loud speaker cabinet substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
