Abstract

158,891. Szarvasy, I. Feb. 28, 1914, [Convention date]. Carbon; hydrogen.-Pure retort-carbon is produced by decomposing methane in an internallyheated retort containing pieces of carbon obtained in a previous operation. The decomposition is preferably effected in a tube-furnace. inclined slightly to the horizontal so that the carbon filling fed in at the upper end is discharged automatically at the lower when the tube is rotated. The pieces are thus also kept in motion so that they do not become joined together by the carbon deposited. The tube is heated internally, either by the passage of an electric current through the carbon pieces, or by burning therein hydrogen or some of the methane when an oxidizing gas such as air must be supplied. The heating of the tube, when this is done by combustion of hydrogen or methane, and the decomposition of the methane, may be effected alternately. The hydrogen produced by the decomposition may be used to heat the methane before it is supplied to the furnace. Specification 15071/09 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) is not confined to an internally heated retort. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
