Description

(54) HINGED GULLEY GRATING (71) We, BROADS MANUFACTURING COMPANY LIMITED, a British company of Western Road, Bracknell, Berkshire, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to an improvement in or modification of a gulley grating as described and claimed in our previous patent 1,300,743.
According to the previous patent there is provided an apertured gulley grating and associated frame assembly for embedding in the ground, in which the frame has only three sides such constituting three sides of a rectangle, and the grating has an apertured pattern which extends over substantially the whole area defined by the rectangle and presents the teeth of a comb-like portion of the pattern on the fourth side of the rectangle, there being provision for supporting and locating the grating on the frame.
In the previous invention the grating was hingedly supported on the road side of the frame and this necessitated the provision of the comb-like portion to prevent vehicle wheels, especially bicycle wheels, from entering into a slot which would otherwise have been present between the grating and the kerb.
The object of thepresent invention is to provide a new and improved gulley grating.
The invention provides an apertured gulley grating and associated frame assembly for embedding in the ground, in which the frame has only three sides such constituting three sides of a rectangle and defining an open side, and the grating has an apertured pattern which extends over substantially the whole area defined by the rectangle, the grating being hingedly supported at the corners adjacent the open side of the frame and there being further provision for supporting and locating the grating on the frame.
Since the grating is hinged at the kerb side, there is no need for the comb-like portion.
However, if desired, the grating may have a comb-like portion of the pattern on the fourth side of the rectangle, the comb-likeportion of the pattern on the fourth side of the rectangle, the comb-like portion comprising three or more than or less than three teeth.
The grating may be provided with downwardly extending lugs which stand in channels provided at each corner of the frame, the lugs and the channels at the corners adjacent the open side of the frame being shaped so t hat the grating is pivotally hinged thereon.
Further, the downwardly extending lugs of the grating and the channels of the frame may be shaped so that the grating cannot be pivoted upwardly by lifting from the kerb-side edge of the grating, ie the edge adjacent the open side of the frame, but only at the road-side edge, and also that when the grating is removed (say for maintenance purposes) the grating cannot be reinserted the wrong way round.
The channels adjacent the closed side of the frame may be formed on, or be cast integrally with inwardly extending flanges.
The assembly of the grating and the frame is positioned such that the open side of the frame is adjacent the kerb.
The frame may be provided with a part peripheral raised rib remote from its open end to improve the casting procedure, and to discourage twisting or springing of the frame due to its three sided construction.
An example of a gulley grating and associated frame assembly according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE 1 is a plan view of a gulley grating and frame in a closed condition, and FIGURE 2 is a section on 2-2 of Figure 1, the grating in an open position.
Referring to the drawings, the frame in Figure 1 has three sides forming a rectangle, having a front 1 and two parallel sides 2. Opposite the front 1 is an open side, and at each corner of the frame there are provided channels 3, 4, 5 and 6 in which downwardly extending lugs 7 from the grating 8 rest. The grating is of othodox parallel bar type having front to rear bars extending between a front longitudinally edge part 9 and a second element 9a is also provided with three comb-like teeth which will reach substantially to the kerb whilst affording clear drainage between themselves.
If desired the comb may comprise more than or less than three teeth.
The channels 3 and 4 in the front two corners of the frame are formed on flanges 10, there being an aperture 11 between the grating 8 and the frame 1 to allow clear drainage.
The lugs 7 on the grating which rest in the rear channels 5 and 6, and the channels themselves are so shaped that the grating 8 may be swung pivotally into an open position, the lugs then being accommodated in the channels 5 and 6 in a manner that prevents further pivotal movement of the grating 8.
Further, the downwardly extending lugs 7 of the grating 8, and the channels 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the frame 1 are shaped so that the grating cannot be pivoted upwardly by lifting the grating at the open frame side, and also that when the grating is removed (say for maintenance purposes) the grating cannot be reinserted the wrong way round.
The frame 1 has part-peripheral raised ribs 15 remote from the open end, to improve the casting procedure and to discourage twisting or springing of the frame 1 due to its three sided construction.
As is the usual practice, each of the two components, namely the grating 8 and the frame 1, are made as single castings, the minimum of machining being required.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:- 1. An apertured gulley grating and associated frame for embedding in the ground, in which the frame has only three sides, such constituting three sides of a rectangle, and defining an open side, and the grating has an apertured pattern which extends over substantially the whole area defined by the rectangle, the grating being hingedly supported at the corners adjacent the open side of the frame and there being further provision for supporting and locating the grating on the frame.
2. An assembly according to Claim 1 wherein the grating has a comb-like portion of said apertured pattern on the fourth side of the rectangle, the comb comprising three or more than or less than three teeth.
3. An assembly according to Claim 2 in which the grating is provided with downwardly extending lugs which stand in channels provided at each corner of the frame.
4. An assembly according to Claim 3, wherein the downardly extending lugs of the grating, and the channels of the frame are shaped so that the grating cannot be pivoted upwards by lifting from the kerb side edge of the grating, ie the edge adjacent the open side of the frame, but only at the road side edge.
5. An assembly according to Claim 3 or Claim 4 wherein the mating elements between the grating and the frame are shaped so that when the grating is removed, it cannot be replaced the wrong way round.
6. An assembly according to Claims 3, or Claim 4 wherein the channels adjacent the closed side of the frame are formed on or are cast integrally with inwardly extending flanges.
7. An assembly according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the frame is provided with a part-peripheral raised rib.
8. An assembly substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
