Description

(54) SHOW JUMPING GAME (71) I, ERNEST VICTOR MELLOR, a British subject of Parkside, 44 Price's Avenue, Cliftonville, Margate, CT9 2NT, formerly of 4a, Graham Road, Great Malvern, Worcestershire, WR14 2KN, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to a game simulating horse show jumping and provides apparatus for playing said game.
According to the present invention, there is provided apparatus for playing a game simulating horse show jumping, said apparatus comprising first random indicator means having two or more randomly indicatable positions of which at least one is marked with "an indicium representative of a show jumping fault" (as hereinbefore defined) and at least one is unmarked or marked with "an indicium representative of a clear jump" (as hereinbefore defined) second random indicator means having a plurality of randomly indicatable positions marked with respective numerical indicia representative of the duration of respective time faults a playing surface marked with a representation of a horse jumping arena; obstacles for location on the surface; and model horses for movement on the surface.
In use, the apparatus simulates a horse show jumping competition. The first random indicator means Is operated to indicate whether or not an obstacle has been cleared without a jumping fault and the second random indicator is operated to indicate time faults incurred in jumping a round of obstacles. The two said means can be operated substantially simultaneously or otherwise in the or each round of the game or they can be operated in separate rounds. Usually, the second random indicator means will be operated only in a round limited to those players having indicated no faults in an immediately preceding round or, in the absence of any players having such a clear round, having indicated the least number of faults in the preceding round.
Suitably, the first random indicator means is an equilateral body having six or more'faces and preferably is a cube. However, other random indicator means can be employed, for example, a pointer rotatably mounted over an indicator board. There can be positions of the first indicator means bearing different indicia representative of different kinds of fault, for example refusal, obstacle knocked down, obstacle dislodge etc. but it is presently preferred that all fault indicating positions should bear identical indicia generally representative of a fault. By the term "an indicium representative of a show jumping fault" I mean an initial, word or drawing which is a representation of the fault. Similarly, the term "an indicium representative of a clear jump" means an initial, word or drawing which is a representation of clear jump.It is preferred that there are more especially at least twice as many positions indicating an obstacle has been cleared than there are indicating that there has been a fault. When the random indicating means is a cube, there will usually be two faces representing faults and four faces representing obstacle cleared.
The second random indicator means suitably also is an equilateral body having six or more faces, preferably a cube. However, it also can be some other random indicator means such as, for example, a pointer rotatably mounted over an indicator board. The numerical indicia of the second random indicator means can be numbers, drawings or a number of marks at the respective positions indicating the duration of the respective time faults.
Suitably, each position has a different indicia from each of the other positions. Preferably, the second indicator means is one or more conventional spotted dice.
It is preferred that the apparatus of the invention includes a set of instruction members, particularly cards, each of which bears an instruction relevant to faults in horse show jumping. When said set is provided, rules of the game will determine when and how a said member is to be selected. Usually, the rules will provide that the top member of the set is selected whenever a fault is indicated by the first random indicator means and that the selected member is then returned to the bottom of the set.
The apparatus can include also scoring means, for example score cards, for keeping score during the game.
A playing surface, especially a board, marked with a representation of a horse jumping arena is also provided together with model obstacles for location on the surface and model horses for movement on the surface.
The following is a description by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings of apparatus in accordance with the present invention. In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of a playing board of apparatus of the invention; Figure 2 is a side view of a model obstacle for use on the board of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a side view of a model horse for use on the board of Figure 1; and Figure 4 is a perspective view of two dice of the apparatus.
Referring to the drawings, apparatus for playing a game comprises a board 1 having printed or otherwise marked on the upper surface 2 thereof a diagrammatic representation of a horse show jumping arena. A plurality of obstacles 3, in the form of models of different obstacles to be jumped in show jumping, are provided for location at spaced positions on the surface 2. Also provided are a plurality of model horses 4, which can be differently coloured and/or numbered to permit of ready distinction between them. The apparatus further includes two dice 5, 6 and a set of instruction or "fault" cards (not shown). As can be seen from Figure 4, the die 5 is a conventional dotted die. However, the die 6 is not; it has an opposite pair of faces marked with the letter "F" to indicate a fault and the remaining faces unmarked to represent that an obstacle has been cleared without fault.
The fault cards are thirty in number and bear instructions as follows: Number of Cards Printed instructions 8 "OBSTACLE DOWN" - 4 faults 8 "OBSTACLE DISLODGED ONLY" - no faults 6 "REFUSAL" 1st - 3 faults 2nd - 6 faults 3rd - eliminated 1 "WRONG COURSE" - 4 faults & return to start 1 "WRONG ORDER JUMP" - 4 faults & return to start 1 "FALL OF HORSE" - 8 faults 1 "OBSTACLE DOWN & BR< FALL OF HORSE" - 12 faults 2 "REFUSAL AND FALL OFF HORSE" 1st - 11 faults 2nd - 14 faults 3rd - eliminated 2 "REFUSAL, OBSTACLE DOWN AND FALL OFF HORSE" 1st - 15 faults 2nd - 18 faults 3rd - eliminated In use, each player selects or is given one or more model horses 4 and is allocated a respective place in the order of play for each model. The model obstacles 3 are placed on the board 1 to represent a show jumping course and the fault cards are shuffled and then placed as a pack beside the playing board. Each player then throws the die 6 at his respective turn to indicate whether or not the respective model horse 4 is considered to have cleared the respective obstacle 3. If the die 6 comes to rest with a plane face uppermost, the obstacle is considered to have been cleared. However if the die 6 comes to rest with a letter "F" uppermost, the player is required to take the top fault card from the pack, note the instruction and then return it to the bottom of the pack. The procedure is followed until all the model horses 4 are considered to have cleared each model obstacle or have been eliminated. The winner of the round is the horse or horses with a clear round (i.e. no faults) or with the lowest number of faults. If there is a tie between two or more horses, the relevant players then take part in a second round using the respective model horses only. If there is still a tie after this second round, a third round is played in which the relevant players throw the die 5 at each turn instead of the die 6. The number of spots on the uppermost face of the die 5 when it comes to rest is considered to represent the time penalty in seconds for the obstacle and the winner will be the player having the lowest aggregate time penalty in this final round.
It will be appreciated that the invention is not restricted to the particular details described above but that numerous modifications and variations can be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
