Abstract

158,363. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Nov. 4. 1919. Wire and ribbon resistances, embedded and encased.-A heating-element consists of a wire 1 wound on but insulated from a metal support 10 which is enclosed in a metal sheath 17 filled with powdered insulating-material, the diameter of the sheath being reduced and the insulating-material compacted by swaging or rolling. The turns of the wire may be in contact with one another when first wound, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the turns being subsequently separated and the insulating- material being forced between them by the rolling process as shown in Fig. 6. The element is made by first covering the support 10 with powdered insulating-material such as magnesium oxide moistened with a solution of sodium silicate, the support being placed in a two-part mould and the insulating-material being forced into the mould round the support by means of a die. The mould is then opened and the support removed and dried. The support is formed with a shoulder 11, and a metal ferrule 14 is secured to the insulating-material while in the mould, the completed support and insulating-material and wire wound thereon being shown in Fig. 4. A ring 16 holds the wire in position at the lower end. The support is then enclosed in the sheath 17, which is closed at the bottom by a washer 18 insulated from the core. The sheath is then filled with powdered material such as dry magnesium oxide and the upper end temporarily closed by a washer 19. The whole is then subjected to a reducing process such as swaging or rolling, and the upper end of the sheath is cut off to remove the washer 19. A steel washer 20 is then placed over and in contact with the sleeve 14 and a second washer 22 is placed over the core 10 as shown in Fig. 6, the two washers being provided with terminals 21, 25, the terminal 21 passing through a slot 23 in the washer 22. The core 10 is riveted over as shown at 24 to hold the whole together. Specification 144,767 is referred to.
