Description

(54) AGRICULTURAL ROLLER (71) We, SIMBA MACHINERY LIMITED, a British Company of Leasingham Hall, Leasingham, Sleaford, Lincolnshire, do hereby declare the invention, for which - we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to an improved agricultural roller.
According to the present invention we provide an agricultural roller in which the surface of the roller has a plurality of radial blades projecting therefrom and extending across the surface of the roller substantially in parallel to the axis of rotation of the roller.
More particularly the invention also includes an agricultural roller comprising a frame, a drum rotatably mounted in bearings on the frame and a plurality of blades projecting radially from the drum at equally spaced intervals about the circumference of the drum and extending across the surface of the roller substantially in parallel to the axis of rotation of the roller, the blades being of sufficient dimension such that on rotation of the roller the blades will break up and shatter the ground over which it passes.
A roller in accordance with the present invention is a robust agricultural implement designed to withstand impact from stumps and other debris that may be encountered when cultivating rough ground. Preferably the blades are welded to the roller to give maximum strength and low cost replacement if necessary.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a preferred embodiment of agricultural roller, and Figures 2, 3 and 4 are plan views of alternative arrangements incorporating more than one roller implement.
In the drawings an agricultural roller comprises a substantially rectangular frame 1 having a front 2, a rear 3 and opposed sides 4. Secured to the front 2 is a spring-loaded hitch point 5 by means of which the implement may be towed, for example by a tractor; the spring loading reducing shock when running over obstacles. The opposed sides 4 support a drum 6 which is rotatable on an axle 7 mounted in roller bearings 8, the housing 9 of which is secured to the respective side 4. The axle 7 may be a single member or may comprise separate aligned axle sections at either side of the drum 6.
The drum 6 is a hollow drum of 1200mm diameter and has a wall thickness of about 18mm. Projecting outwardly from the drum at equally spaced intervals about the circumference thereof are a plurality of radial blades 10, preferably about 175mm long and 15mm thick. The radial blades 10 are secured to the roller drum 6 by welding.
Figure 1 also shows one of a pair of attachment points 11 on the rear 3 of the frame to which further rollers may be attached either directly by couplings 12 or by chains 13 to form a gang. In this respect figures 2, 3 and 4 show various alternative arrangements.
In use the agricultural roller is towed by a tractor causing the roller to rotate in bearings 8. The blades 10 on the roller drum 6 cut and shatter rough terrain, such as scrub, undergrowth and old crop residue. The agricultural roller also helps reduce soil erosion by additionally compacting the soil as it breaks it up.
Although a particular roller has been described by way of example it is understood that various modifications may be made, for example: the drum may be any desired diameter with the blades bolted rather than welded thereto; and the blades may extend over the whole width or only a part of the width of the roller.
In order to increase the weight of the roller the drum may be filled with water or concrete or any other suitable material.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. An agricultural roller in which the surface of the roller has a plurality of radial blades projecting therefrom and extending
