Description
(54) METHOD OF FORMING A START COURSE FOR A DOUBLE
WELT IN A SINGLE CYLINDER KNITTING MACHINE
(71) We, ELITEX, koncern textilniho strojirenstvi of Liberec, Czechoslovakia, a corporate body organised and existing under the laws of Czechoslovakia, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- The present invention relates to a method of forming a start course for a double welt in a single cylinder knitting machine, particularly a start course without rubber yarn.
The method of forming start courses in single cylinder knitting machines used hitherto consists in that yarn is laid into the empty needles in 1:1 distribution, and after knitting the first course, said needle distribution 1:1 is changed in such a manner that the needles which were in inoperative position during the first revolution, now take yarn, while the needles in which yarn was already laid remain in their inoperative position. The next step consists in casting yarn on to welt hooks.
The disadvantage of this method consists in that an accurate change in needle distribution after the first revolution is difficult, at least two shoggings of the control drum being necessary. This problem appears particularly in machines, in which more changes are to be performed for manufacturing the knitted fabric and in which it becomes necessary to provide a special device for shogging the control drum. A further disadvantage consists in that the extensibility of the knitted fabric is limited, this reducing the quality of the hosiery goods in machines with a smaller number of needles. Therefore, this kind of goods is not manufactured.
The purpose of the present invention consists of forming a start course in a simple and safe manner for a double welt in a single cylinder knitting machine and thus mitigate the mentioned disadvantages.
According to the present invention there is provided a method of forming start courses for a double welt in single cylinder knitting machines, particularly start courses without rubber yarn, wherein a first yarn is laid into and drawn by all needles over projected sinkers, alternate needles are cleared with respect to the first yarn while a second yarn is fed to the cleared alternate needles over projected welt hooks and the intermediate needles remain in a loop drawing position, and the second yarn is drawn by the alternate needles.
An example of the method according to the present invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which are represented the positions of needles,' sinkers and welt hooks in developed form and laying and drawing yarn.
A single cylinder circular knitting machine is provided with a needle cylinder (not shown), in which needles 1 are arranged, which are controlled by a not represented cam system. Needles 1 co-operate for the purpose of forming loops, with sinkers 2, which are disposed ifl a not represented sinker ring and are controlled by a not represented cam system. Furthermore, the machine is provided by a not represented welt dial with welt hooks 3.
The start course for a double welt is performed in the following manner: For explaining the present invention only a few needles are used, which are denoted la-le, and which represent actually all alternate needles. In the first feed, yarn P1 is laid into all needles 1. Before the following feed, needles 1 are distributed 1:1. Thus in the second feed, odd needles 1 pass in the lower position while holding yarn P1, and even needles la-le are cleared with respect to yarn P1 while being fed yarn P2. The sinkers 2 remain projected in the forward position and welt hooks 3 are also projected.
Yarn P1 laid in the first feed is held by sinkers 2 closely on the shanks of needles la-le. This ensures that the needle loops of yarn P1 get below the latches of needles la-le, as can be seen with needles la, ib, lc.
Yarn P2 is laid in such a manner, that it is cast on to welt hooks 3. In view of that, upon casting-on dial loops of yarn P2 are formed between needles la to le and welt hooks 3, the sinkers 2 can remain already in the mentioned forward position; this being impossible in usual knitting for the reason that the loop is formed between needle 1 and the edge of the sinker 2. Upon castingon, the clearing plane is formed by the position of welt hooks 3 which are situated substantially higher than the edges of sinkers 2, whereby longer loops are obtained in the start course, and therefore the extensibility in the start course is higher. The latches of needles la to le, into which is laid yarn P2, are closed upon lowering of these needles by means of yarn P1 and by drawing yarn P2 with needles la-le over the welt hooks 3 dial loops are formed, whereupon by lowering needles la-te under the plane of sinkers 2, as can be seen best with needles ld and le, the already formed dial loops of yarn P2 are drawn past yarn P1. Simultaneously yarn P1 is held by inoperative needles 1, and thus also yarn P2 is held on the welt hooks 3 for the following lifting needles la-te into the clearing position.
Upon finishing casting-on, sinkers 2 must be opened at the point of clearing, this being performed by back lowering of a not represented sinker followed by knitting on all needles 1 by means of sinkers 2.
The main advantage of the present invention consists in that, a higher extensibility of the knitted fabric is obtained, this making possible an application even for machines with a smaller number of needles. Further, it is not necessary to use rubber yarn, which substantially improves the conditions upon forming a start course, even when its use is not excluded, but also not necessary. Furthermore, the said method makes it possible to reduce the number of shogging operations of the control drum and thus simplifies the operation of the machine.

A method of forming start courses for a double welt in single cylinder knitting machines, particularly start courses without rubber yarn, wherein a first yarn is laid into and drawn by all needles over projected sinkers, alternate needles are cleared with respect to the first yarn while a second yarn is fed to the cleared alternate needles over projected welt hooks and the intermediate needles remain in a loop drawing position, and the second yarn is drawn by the alternate needles.
2. A method of forming start courses for a double welt in single cylinder knitting machines, particularly start courses without rubber yarn, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
