Description
(54) HINGED LID PACKETS
(71) We, MOLINS LIMITED, a British
Company of 2, Evelyn Street, Deptford,
London SE8 5DH, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
This invention relates to hinged lid packets, for example for containing cigarettes, and is particularly concerned with an improvement in or modification of a hinged lid packet as described in the specification of British Patent No. 1,431,173 (and Italian
Patent No. 986,616).
In said specification there is disclosed and claimed a hinged lid packet with a lid portion hinged to a body portion, the body portion comprising a front wall, a rear wall, a pair of side walls each formed by an inner flap extending from the rear wall and by an outer flap extending from the front wall, a recessed panel extending upwardly from the front wall, the panel being narrower than the front wall and being deformed inwardly parallel thereto so that when the packet is closed the panel lies wholly within the lid portion, and a pair of side flaps extending from the sides of the panel, the lower part of each side flap being sandwiched between the inner and outer flaps of the respective side walls.
According to the present invention there is provided a hinged lid packet with a lid portion hinged to a body portion, the body portion comprising a front wall, a rear wall, a pair of side walls each formed by an inner flap extending from the rear wall and by an outer flap extending from the front wall, a recessed panel extending upwardly from the front wall, the panel being deformed inwardly parallel to the front wall, and a pair of side flaps extending from the sides of the panel, each side flap being adhesively secured to the inner flap of the respective side wall, and the lower edges of the side flaps being level with the upper edges of the outer flaps.
The invention also extends to a onepiece blank for such a hinged lid packet, in which the lower edge of each side flap is spaced from the upper edge of the respective outer flap by a narrow parallel gap.
A packet and blank according to the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the packet, and
Figure 2 is a plan view of part of the blank from which the packet is made.
For convenience the reference numerals used herein correspond wherever possible with those in the abovementioned specification, but are increased by 100.
The part of the blank shown in Figure 2 includes a rear wall 120 with inner flaps 123 extending from the sides thereof, a front wall 122 with outer flaps 124 extending from the sides thereof, and a base panel 121 connecting the front and rear walls.
From the top of the front wall 122 there extends a recessed panel 130 whose width, as defined by the fold lines 131, is slightly narrower than that of the front wall. (In
Figure 2 this width is shown exaggeratedly narrower, for the sake of clarity). Extending from each side of the panel 130 is a side flap 132 whose inclined lower edge 133 is spaced from the inclined upper edge 137 of the respective outer flap 124 by a narrow parallel-sided gap. The width of the gap, which is again shown exaggerated in Figure 2, is formed in the production of the blank by removing a strip of material between each side flap 132 and the respective outer flap 124.
The remainder of the blank, which constitutes the lid of the packet, is not shown as it is the same as that described in the above-mentioned specification.
When the blank is folded in the usual manner to form the packet shown in Figure 1, each flap 132 is secured by adhesive to the inwardly deformed top portion 123A of the respective inner flap 123. The gap is then no longer visible as the lower edge of each flap 132 is brought into alignment or level with the upper edge of the adjacent outer flap 124, due to the combined effect on the inclined edges 133 and 137 of the inward recessing of the panel 130, and of the inward disposition of each fold line 131.
The width of the gap may correspond approximately to the depth to which the panel 130 is recessed, i.e. the thickness of the blank. If the gap is wider than this, there would then be a smaller area of over-lap between the flap 132 and the inner flap 123, so that it would be more difficult to secure these flaps together with adhesive.
Furthermore, a part of the gap would then be visible at each side of the open packet, which would detract from the appearance of the packet.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. A hinged lid packet with a lid portion hinged to a body portion, the body portion comprising a front wall, a rear wall, a pair of side walls each formed by an inner flap extending from the rear wall and by an outer flap extending from the front wall, a recessed panel extending upwardly from the front wall, the panel being deformed inwardly parallel to the front wall, and a pair of side flaps extending from the sides of the panel, each side flap being adhesively secured to the inner flap of the respective side wall, and the lower edges of the side flaps being level with the upper edges of the outer flaps.
2. A one-piece blank for forming a hinged lid packet as claimed in claim 1, in which the lower edge of each side flap is spaced from the upper edge of the respective outer flap by a narrow parallel gap.
3. A one-piece blank as claimed in claim 2 in which said parallel gap is of a width corresponding approximately to the thickness of the material of the blank.
4. A hinged lid packet substantially as herein described with reference to, and as illustrated in, Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing.
5. A one-piece blank for forming a hinged lid packet substantially as herein described with reference to, and as illustrated in, Figure 2 of the accompanying drawing.

Claims (5)
