Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN PERAMBULATORS AND PUSH CHAIRS FOR INFANTS (71) We, TELISPORT LIMITED, a British Company, also trading as LUXI LEISURE of Bridge Works, Manchester Road, Broadheath, County of Chester, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to improvements in perambulators and push chairs for infants.
It has been proposed to provide a chassis for carrying cots in which the carrying cot is removably mounted on the chassis to provide a perambulator and push chair for older children are also well known.
The object of the invention is the combination of a carrying cot chassis, a carrying cot provided with a hood and a push chair so that as the infant grows the carrying cot can be removed and the chassis converted into a push chair having a hood without any additional expense.
According to the invention a combination perambulator carrying cot and push chair assembly forming a set of components which can be arranged in different combinations to provide alternative functions having an X frame unit comprising two pairs of X arms mounted on wheels and having a handle frame pivoted to one pair of the X arms of the X frame unit, a horizontal rectangular frame pivoted to the second pair of X arms of the X frame unit and to the handle frame, a carrying cot formed with a rod or bar extending transversely of the base and removable forked brackets affixed to the rectangular frame to receive the ends of the rod or bar on the carrying cot when this latter is in use and a push chair assembly for mounting on the rectangular frame by flaps and press studs after removal of the carrying cot when the push chair is in use, a foot rest mounted on a rod passing through links affixed to one pair of the X arms of the X frame unit, the foot rest being pivoted to rest between the members of the X frame unit when the carrying cot is on the rectangular frame and into an operative position for use with the push chair, and a hood mounted on the carrying cot and removable therefrom for reversal and attachment to the rectangular frame when the push chair is in use.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings:- Figure 1 is a side elevation of an X frame unit chassis with a carrying cot mounted thereon; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a carrying cot from below; Figure 3 is a side elevation of the linkage supporting a foot rest in the position occupied when the chassis is employed for carrying a carrying cot; Figure 4 is a similar elevation of the position of the linkage when the chassis is in use as a push chair and showing the foot rest in two positions; Figure 5 is a side elevation of the X frame unit supporting a push chair in a reclining position; Figure 6 is a similar side elevation of the X frame unit supporting the push chair in a sitting up position; Figure 7 is a detail view partly in section of the position in the circle of Figure 6.
A combination of a carrying cot 1 and push chair 2 are mounted alternatively on an X frame unit comprising two pairs of X arms of a foldable chassis with a handle rod 13 pivoted at each side of the chassis on the arms 3 of first members of the X frame unit.
The X arms 3, 3a are pivoted together and mounted on wheels 4 provided with a brake 5 in known manner.
The carrying cot 1 is formed with a rod 6 mounted transversely of the bottom to extend outwardly thereof and with a second bar 7 mounted parallel to the rod or bar 6 and in the same horizontal plane.
The rod or bar 6 of the carrying cot engage fork brackets 9 at each side of the vehicle the fork brackets being affixed to a substantially rectangular frame 8 pivoted on the arms 3a of the second member of the X frame unit and to the handle rod 13 to allow the X frames chassis to fold for transport purposes. The ends of the rod or bar 6 carry a screw 10 and nut 11 for securing the carrying cot to the rectangular frame 8 with the bar 7 resting thereon. The forked brackets 9 are secured to the frame 8 by bolts 12.
A foot rest 14 is pivoted on a rod 15 passing through slots 16b in links 17 affixed to the arms 3 of the X frame unit and held stationary by a tie rod 18. When the perambulator is being used as a carrying cot the foot rest 14 is pivoted on the rod 15 into the position shown in Figures 1 and 3 the frame end being supported on a link 14a from the arms 3a of the frame.
When the infant grows too big for the carrying cot 1 and it is necessary to convert the perambulator into a push chair 2, the carrying cot is removed and the hood 19 is removed from the carrying cot 1 and affixed to the push chair.
The hood 19 is reversed i.e. the front of the hood when on the carrying cot 1 is now attached to the frame 8 by the bolt 12 and dished knobs, to the forked brackets 9 thereon. An elasticated flap 19a around the original front of the hood extends over the front end of the rectangular frame 8 of the chassis, to provide a weathertite junction and to attach the hood thereto.
The footrest 14 is released from the link 14a and pivoted into the position shown in Figure 5 and a fabric weatherproof jointed surround 20 is affixed to the horizontal frame 8 by flaps 21 and press studs 22 to form the body of the push chair the sides of which are stiffened wooden sheets. The footrest 14 forms the end of the frame for the push chair and is retained in an extended horizontal position with the end of the footrest engaging under the link 17, as shown in Figure 4. A mattress is placed in the body.
In order to convert the push chair to enable the child to sit up the footrest is pivoted into the position shown in Figure 6 with the rod 15 in the opposite end of the slots 16 to release the end of the footrest from the link 17 (Figure 4). The mattress 23 bends at the joint inside the surround 20 and a U shaped back rest 24 is pivoted up from the end of the frame 8 into the position shown in Figure 6 and held by a clip 25.
The pairs of X arms of the X frame are prevented from folding when in use by rings 26 slidable on the arms 3 of the X frame unit and a locking catch 27 pivoted on the handle rod 13.
In order to fold the chassis for transport purposes the catch 27 is pivoted and the rings 26 are slid up the handle rod 13 in known manner.
The invention provides a combination of a perambulator, a push chair and carrying cot with a single hood applicable for the perambulator and the push chair.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A combination perambulator, carrying cot and push chair assembly forming a set of components which can be arranged in different combinations to provide alternative functions having an X frame unit comprising two pairs of X arms mounted on wheels and having a handle frame pivoted to one pair of the X arms of the X frame unit, a horizontal rectangular frame pivoted to the second pair of X arms of the X frame unit and to the handle frame, a carrying cot formed with a rod or bar extending transversely of the base and removable forked brackets affixed to the rectangular frame to receive the ends of the rod or bar on the carrying cot when this latter is in use and a push chair assembly for mounting on the rectangular frame by flaps and press studs after removal of the carrying cot when the push chair is in use, a foot rest mounted on a rod passing through links affixed to one pair of the X arms of the X frame unit, the foot rest being pivoted to rest between the members of the X frame unit when the carrying cot is on the rectangular frame and into an operative position for use with the push chair, and a hood mounted on the carrying cot and removable therefrom for reversal and attachment to the rectangular frame when the push chair is in use.
2. A combination perambulator, carrying cot and push chair assembly as in Claim 1 in which the rod carrying the foot rest is mounted to pivot in slots in links affixed to one pair of the X arms of the X frame unit to lie in an inoperative position when the carrying cot is in use.
3. A combination perambulator, carrying cot and push chair assembly as in Claim 1 in which the rod carrying the footrest is pivotable into an operative position to alternatively form one end of the push chair assembly when in a horizontal position or a support for the feet when in an inclined position.
4. A combination perambulator, carrying cot and push chair assembly substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
