Description

(54) PNEUMATIC VEHICLE TYRE (71) We, CONTINENTAL GUMMI WERKE AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT of Continental-Haus/Postfach 169, 3000 Hanover, Germany (Fed. Rep); a German body corporate, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to a pneumatic vehicle tyre in which the carcase is anchored in each tyre bead region by wrapping around a single bead core and in each tyre bead region two bead reinforcing plies are located, of which one ply is located adjacent the tyre outer surface and the other ply adjacent the tyre inner surface.
In known pneumatic vehicle tyres of this kind, the ply facing the wheel flange in use is located between the wheel flange and the carcase. whilst the ply on the opposite side is located between the bead core and the carcase.
It is an object of the invention to improve such pneumatic tyres.
According to the present invention there is provided a pneumatic vehicle tyre in which the carcase is anchored in each tyre bead region by wrapping around a single bead core so that there is a wrap-around portion between the bead core and the outer surface of the tyre, and in each tyre bead region, two bead reinforcing plies are located, of which one ply is an axially outer ply located between the wrap-around portion of the carcase and the outer surface of the tyre and the other is an axially inner ply located between the portion of the carcase which extends continuously from one bead to the other and the inner surface of the tyre. the radially inner edges of both plies being located radially outwardly of the radially innermost extremity of the carcase.
Preferably. the bead reinforcing members comprise cords.
The present invention will be further illustrated, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the single Figure shows a radial part section through a tyre bead of a pneumatic tyre suitable for lorries fitted on a rim.
The carcase 1 comprised of steel wires, which is formed as a so-called radial carcase, is anchored in each tyre bead 2 by wrapping around a bead core 3. The wrap-around portion 4 of the carcase slightly overlaps the wheel flange 5 of the rim 6.
Plies 7 and 7', which act as bead reinforcing members are provided on both sides of the carcase 1. The plies are comprised of steel cords located at an angle to the circumferential direction of the tyre. Both plies 7 terminate inwardly on a diameter which is slightly larger than the diameter D, which diameter D is determined by the inner circumference of the bead core 3 and the carcase ply of the carcase 1 abutting thereagainst, so that a cushion 8 of rubber or the like material may be formed to improve the tyre seat, which in an operational state is slightly pre-stressed.
The outer ply 7' is located between the wrap-around portion 4 and the wheel flange 5, whilst the inner ply 7, which overlaps the ply 7', is located between the portion of carcase 1 which extends continuously from one bead to the other and the inner surface 9 of the pneumatic tyre. The radially inner edges of both plies are located radially outwardly of the radially innermost extremity of the carcase 1.
For reasons of perfect stepping, the upper end of the ply 7 overlaps the ply 7', the ply 7' overlaps the wrap-around portion 4. and the wrap-around portion 4, in turn. overlaps the wheel flange 5. in use.
