Description

(54) SHUT-OFF FLAP VALVE (71) I, JOSEFNEMETZ, a citizen of the German Federal Republic, of von Bergmann -Strasse 39, D6200 Wiesbaden, German Federal Republic, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to a shut-off flap valve of the kind described in the Specification of my Parent Patent 1,383,349.
Shut-off flap valves of the said kind, more especially in the preferred constructional form having sealing lips, have hitherto proved satisfactory in practical use. However, it has been found in practice that the sealing lips, more especially under high pressure, high temperature or high flow velocity and particularly with relatively nominal diameters, can be turned down or reversed during the closing operation. This danger more especially arises when the sealing lining is only placed and not vulcanised in position and when the material from which the sealing lining is made has to present a low Shore hardness value for technical reasons. Furth- ermore, it has been found in practice that after being at rest for long periods, while the shut-off flap valve is closed, a strong opening moment is necessary for opening purposes, because it is not possible completelv to avoid a certain sticking action of the material, more especially elastomer, from which the sealing lining may be made, to the sealing flap.
With a shut-off flap valve according to the present invention this problem is essentially solved by the fact that the casing or annular supporting means within the casing comprises an encircling groove, the resilient sealing lining is arranged in the groove, comprises a lip on both sides on the inside facing the flap, between which lips the flap bears in the closed position on the sealing lining and, on the side remote from the flap the casing or annular supporting means comprises shoulders above the lips which extend around both sides of the sealing lining and bear against the latter.
More especially with high pressure, high temperature or high flow velocity, especially with relatively large nominal diameters, and also when the sealing lining is only laid and not vulcanised in position and the said lining comprises for technical reasons only a low Shore hardness value, the groove and the shoulders bearing on the sealing lining above the lips prevent the lip, beneath which the flap is rotated into the closed position and between the two lips, being turned over in the closing operation.
It is expedient to leave an encircling intermediate space on that side of the shoulders which is facing the flap and between the lips of the sealing lining and the casing or annular supporting means. On the pressure side, the pressure thus also acts on the side of the lip remote from the flap and forces this against the flap.
It has also proved advantageous to make the encircling collar T-shaped, the cross-bar of the T resting in the sealing lining on that side of the shoulders facing the flap.
In a further development of the invention, it is advantageous to provide the sealing lining on one or preferably on both sides with encircling flanges on the side of the shoulders on the casing or on annular supporting means which faces the flap, the flanges engaging in recesses in the casing or in the annular supporting means. If such laterally directed flanges are provided, it is impossible for the sealing lips to be turned over during the closing of the flap.
In this arrangement, the collar and the flanges end on both sides of the journal and just before the latter, because the flap in the region of the journal is always in contact with the sealing lining. Flanges and recesses end at the recess for the bearing eye in the annular supporting means. The recesses are longer and higher than the flanges, an encircling intermediate space remaining at the ends of the flanges and on that side of the flanges further from the flap. This intermediate space is disposed in open connection with the interior through the recess for the bearing eye in the supporting means, so that the medium can act on the side further from the flap and can force this in the flap direction.
Should the flap have been closed for a relatively long time, then a relatively high opening moment is necessary for the opening thereof, and in fact also in cases where the flap is lined with PTFE and/or the sealing limng consists of this material.
In a further development of the invention, therefore, it is proposed that the sealing lining should be provided on the side facing the flap with passages or ducts extending on both sides to just before the journal, the said passages or ducts communicating through a pipe with the pressure side of the flap. If the flap is now to be opened after having been closed for a relatively long time, medium is admitted to the passages in the sealing lining via the pipe or conduit, which medium is to flow through the valve. The said medium is under pressure. As a result of the pressure, the adhesive action between sealing lining and flap is removed, or at least reduced to such an extent that the opening moment is considerably reduced and the flap is capable of opening easily.
Provided in the pipe or conduit between the pressure side and the passages is a valve which is only opened when the flap is to be opened after having been closed for a relatively long time. After the first opening of the flap, the valve in the pipe can be once again closed. For the connection of the pipe to the ducts or passages, the casing or annular supporting means and collar can be provided with a radial bore,to which the pipe is connected on the end further from the sealing lining, while the other end thereof is connected through an opening in the sealing lining to the duct or passage. In this arrangement, a corresponding pipe, bore and opening should be provided on both sides of the journal of the flap so that the medium can be admitted to the passages on both sides of the journal.
In another development of the invention, it is possible to provide one or both journals of the flap with an axial bore, to which that end of the pipe further from the flap is con nected, while the other end thereof is to be connected via the passages in the sealing lin ing by way of connecting ducts which are arranged in the flap.
Under certain conditions, the passages can also be arranged in the circumferential sur face of the flap.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a shut-off flap valve for conduits, pipes and vessels, comprising a casing lined with a resilient sealing lining, the casing having mounted therein a flap which is slewable, there being at least one encircling collar fast with the casing and which projects into the resilient sealing lining in the region of the flap, wherein the casing or annular supporting means within the casing comprises an encircling groove in which the resilient sealing lining is disposed, the resilient sealing lining comprises an inside front surface portion facing the flap and at each side of the front surface portion a lip whereby the flap in its closed position bears on the rong surface portion between the lips, and the casing or annular supporting means comprises, on opposite sides of the portion of the sealing lining adjacent the collar, shoulders which extend around and bear against the sealing lining, the lips being located between the flap and the shoulders. Preferably there is an encircling space on that side of the shoulders which face the flap, the space being disposed between the resilient sealing lining and casing or annular supporting means. Desirably the shoulders will bear against the resilient sealing lining in the region of the said encircling collar.
The shoulders and the resilient sealing lining may comprise interengaging, radially directed reinforcing ribs, respectively.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a shut-off flap valve for conduits, pipes and vessels, comprising a casing lined with a resilient sealing lining, the casing having mounted therein a flap which is slewable, there being at least one encircling collar fast with the casing and which projects into the resilient sealing lining in the region of the flap, wherein the free end of the encircling collar is T-shaped in cross-section.
Preferably the cross-bar of the T-shaped cross-section is disposed within the resilient sealing lining on that side of the shoulders (as provided by the first aspect of the invention) facing the flap. The shut-off flap valve may be provided with supporting rings and a bear ing eye between the supporting rings and recesses for the bearing eye.
According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided a shut-off flap valve for conduits, pipes and vessels, comprising a casing lined with a resilient sealing lining, the casing having mounted therein a flap which is slewable, there being at least one encircling collar fast with the casing and which projects into the resilient sealing lining in the region of the flap, wherein the resilient sealing lining comprises on one side or on both sides of the encircling collar an encircling flange, the or each flange engaging in a flange recess in the casing or in annular supporting means within the casing. The or each encircling flange may be arranged on that side of the shoulders which faces the flap. Preferably there is a space in the flange recess on the side remote from the flap and between the flange(s) and the casing or annular supporting means. In accordance with the second or third aspect of the invention the T-shaped end of said encircling collar or the end of the or each flange may extend to just short of both sides of the journal or bearing bush.
Annular supporting means comprising a pair of supporting rings may be provided in which there is a bearing eye between the supporting rings and a recess for the bearing eye, wherein the flange recess, the or each said flange and the said space extend to the bearing eye recess.
According to a fourth aspect of the invention there is provided a shut-off valve for conduits pipes and vessels, comprising a casing lined with a resilient sealing lining, the casing having mounted therein a flap which is slewable, there being at least one encircling collar fast with the casing and which projects into the resilient sealing lining in the region of the flap, which is provided with at least one journal or bearing bush for the flap valve and wherein the resilient sealing lining, on that side remote from said encircling collar, has ducts which extend to just short of both sides of the journal or bearing bush, the ducts communicating via a conduit with a pressure source. Preferably a valve is arranged in said conduit. The said conduit may be connected to a bore through said encircling collar, and that end of the bore further from the said conduit is connected through a passage in the resilient sealing lining to the said duct. The shut-off valve may be provided with one or two journals or bearing bushes, wherein the said conduit is connected to a bore through one or both journals or bearing bushes, whose end in connection with said bore is connected via connecting passages in the flap to the said ducts. The said ducts may be arranged in the circumferential surface of the flap.
With regard to all aspects of the invention the encircling edges of the flap may be bevelled.
The shut-off flap valve of any aspect of the invention may be provided with a journal or bearing bush for the flap valve and wherein said encircling collar ends on both sides of the journal or bearing bush. If desired, the said collar may consist of part-annular elements fitted into part-annular grooves and arranged in the casing so as to be fast with the casing.
In those aspects of the invention where said shoulders are provided and where a journal or bearing bush and bearing eye are provided such shoulders may terminate just short of both sides of the journal or bearing bush and in the region of the bearing eye.
By way of example preferred forms of the invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: - Figure 1 shows the upper half of a vertical section through a shut-off flap valve, having an encircling collar in the sealing area; Figure la is a section on line B-B of Figure 1; Figure 2 shows a shut-off flap valve according to Figures 1 and la, but with an encircling collar which is made T-shaped; Figure 3 shows a shut-off flap valve according to Figure 1 with a sealing lining having laterally directed flanges; Figure 4 shows the upper part of a section perpendicular to the pivotal axis of the flap, with a passage or duct in the sealing lining and a connecting pipe between the said passage and the pressure side through the collar;; Figure 5 shows the upper half of a vertical section parallel to the pivot axis of the flap with passages in the sealing lining and a connecting pipe through the journal, and Figure 6 is a section on the line A-A of Figure 5.
In the constructional form according to Figure 1, a casing 1 has an encircling collar 9, which extends into a resilient sealing lining 4.
This collar 9 is inapplicable in the region of journal 14. If desired, the collar 9 may consist of part-annular elements, which are fitted in part-annular grooves and arranged in the casing 1 so as to be fast with the casing 1, and which grooves preferably extend to just short of both sides of the journal 14 or the bearing bush.
The sealing lining 4 forms an encircling projection 21, into which projects the collar 9. Arranged on both sides of the projection 21 and on that side of the sealing lining 4 which faces a shut-off flap 5 are supporting rings 2, which form a groove 3 into which extends the projection 21 of the sealing lining 4. On the end which faces the flap 5, the projection 21 has on both sides lips 6 which, in conjunction with the projection 21, form a concave surface against which the flap 5 bears in the closed position with its circumferential surface of convex form. On that side of the lips 6 remote from the flap 5, the supporting rings 2 have shoulders 7, which are positioned between the lips 6 and the sealing lining 4 and on the projection 21.
A space 8 is preferably left between the lips 6, the supporting rings 2 and the shoulders 7. The medium is able to penetrate into the space 8, so that the lips 6 have pressure admitted to them on the side further from the flap 5 and they are urged under pressure against the flap 5.
Because of the groove 3 which is formed by the supporting rings 2 and because of the shoulders 7, the lip 6, past which the flap 5 has to be rotated into the closed position, is resiliently shifted with the closing operation.
The sealing lining 4 is clamped between the casing 1 and supporting rings 2.
The sealing lining may comprise outwardly directed, radially arranged flanges 22 on both sides of the casing 1, which flanges serve as a packing for the pipe connection, etc., at the time of assembly.
As shown in Figure la shoulders 7 and sealing lining 4 are provided with interengaging, radially directed reinforcing ribs 7a and 4a respectively.
The embodiment according to Figure 2 corresponds to the constructional form according to Figure 1, except that the collar 9 is made T-shaped in section and the cross-bar 10 of the T-shaped collar in a region which is remote from the shoulders 7 on the supporting rings 2, lies within the resilient sealing lining 4, more particularly between the two lips 6.
In the embodiment according to Figure 3, the projection 21 of the resilient sealing lining 4 comprises laterally directed flanges 11 on that side of the shoulders 7 on the supporting rings 2 which face the flap 5, said flanges 11 engaging grooves 12 provided in the supporting rings 2. These flanges 11 prevent with almost absolute certainty, with the closing movement of the flap valve, the flip 6 past which the flap 5 has to be moved from being resiliently shifted.
The flanges 11 and grooves 12 terminate at recess 25 for the bearing eye 24 in the supporting rings 2. The grooves 12 are longer and wider than the flanges 11, as a result of which an annular space 13 is left at the ends of the flanges 11 and on that side of the flanges 11 further from the flap 5. Through the recess 25 for the bearing eye 24 in the supporting rings 2, the space 13 has an open connection with the interior of the casing, so that fluid medium is able to be operative on that side of the flanges 11 further from the flap 5 and are able to force the said flanges in the direction of the flap 5.
Furthermore, the shoulders 7 on the supporting rings 2 extend to both sides of the journal 14 and to the region of the bearing eye 24.
Flanges 11, grooves 12 and cross-bar 10 are not necessary in the region of the journal 14, because here the flap 5 always bears on the sealing lining 4.
With the constructional form according to Figure 4, the resilient sealing lining 4 has ducts 15 between the two lips 6, which ducts are open towards the side of the flap 5 and, extend to just short of both sides of the journal 14 (not shown in Figure 4). The casing 1 and collar 9 comprise a radially directed bore 23, of which the end facing the flap 5 communicates through a passage 18 with the ducts 15. Connected to that end of the bore 23 further from the flap 5 is a pipe 16 which, in a manner knownper se but not illustrated, is connected to the pressure side of the shutoff flap valve. If the flap 5 has been closed over a relatively long period, then fluid medium, which is to flow through the said valve, is guided from the pressure side through the pipe 16 into ducts 15.The result obtained in this way is that the sticking action between the flap 5 and the sealing lining 4 is eliminated, or is at least reduced to such an extent that only a relatively small opening force is still necessary for opening the flap 5.
A shut-off valve 17 should in this case be provided in the pipe 16. This valve 17 is opened only when the flap 5 is to be opened after having been closed for a relatively long period. After the first opening, the valve 17 can be closed again. It is obviously necessary with this constructional form to provide a passage 18, a bore 23 and a pipe 16, respectively, on both sides of the journal 14 (not shown).
In the constructional form according to Figures 5 and 6, the journal 14 has an axial bore 19, to which the pipe 16 is connected to the end remote from the flap 5. On that end of the journal 14 which is further from the connection of the pipe 16, connecting passages 20 are provided in the flap 5, which passages connect the bore 19 to the ducts 15 in the sealing lining 4.
It is appropriate with all constructions for encircling edges 26 of the flaps 5 to be bevelled.
