Description
(54) MOUNTING OFFSET SIGNS
(71) 1, ROBERT ARTHUR HEN1)ERSON HEARD, of Church Farm, 63 Church Lane,
Backwell, Bristol, BS19 31J, a British Subject, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to sign mountings, and more particularly is directed to means for mounting an offset sign on a supporting post.
The most common type of sign has the supporting post behind the sign plate, and in one form of mounting a channel member is secured to the rear surface of the sign and a strap is connected to the channel and passed around the supporting post. Most offset signs, however, particularly those carrying indicia on both surfaces, cannot be mounted in this way, and the mountings hitherto employed have been generally unsatisfactory in various respects.
According to the present invention there is provided a device for use in mounting a sign plate generally radially with respect to a supporting post, the device comprising a first component for securing to the post and an elongate second component for securing to the sign plate, the first component having a channel portion and a plate projecting therefrom in the direction away from the channel mouth and in a plane parallel to the line of the channel mouth, the elongate second component having a first flange for securing face-to-face with the plate of the first component and a second flange at right angles thereto for securing face-to-face with one edge portion of the sign plate.
Preferably, the second component comprises a pair of first flanges extending oppositely in a common plane on either side of a pair of second flanges which between them define a slot to receive the edge portion of the sign plate.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood, one embodiment will now be described with reference to the drawing accompanying the Provisional Specification which shows a perspective view of a sign mounted to a supporting post.
Referring to the drawing; a sign plate 10, having indicia on both sides, is mounted to a supporting post 12 so as to project radially therefrom. The mounting comprises a pair of first components 14 which are secured to the post, and a pair of second components 16 which connect the sign plate to the first components.
The first components are formed from identical extrusions, suitably of aluminium, and each comprises a channel-shaped part 18, in which the mouth of the channel is restricted by inturned lips 20. One wall of the channel part is extended in the opposite direction from the channel mouth in the form of a plate 22. The first components are mounted to the supporting post 12 by means of straps 24 which are connected to the channel parts and tightened around the post. Various means are available for connecting the straps to the channel parts, for example as described in my U.K. Patent to. 1,416,734 or my U.K. Patent 1,533,412.
The second mounting components 16 are formed from identical extrusions, suitably of aluminium, and of generally T-shaped cross-section. More specifically, the crosssection provides a pair of first flanges 26, exttnding in a common plane in opposite directions from a pair of second flanges 28 which are parallel to each other and form the leg of the T. The pair of second flanges between them define a slot of width slightly greater than the thickness of the sign plate.
The second mounting components are secured along the upper and lower edges of the sign plate 10, by receiving the edge portions of the sign plate in the slots defined by the flanges 28. Holes are then drilled at intervals through the flanges 28 and the enclosed edge portions of the sign plate, to receive rivets 30 which secure the components 16 to the sign plate.
The second components are mounted on the first components by bringing the flanges 26 face-to-face with the plates 22, drilling holes through both parts and then riveting them together, as indicated at 32. In this way. the sign plate is secured to the post so as to project radially therefrom. In practice, the first and second components will normally be secured together before mounting the sign to the post. The sign plate 10 can be mounted to the second components either before or after mounting the first and second components together, but in practice it may be found preferable to start by mounting the second components to the sign plate, in order to facilitate the drilling of holes for the rivets 30. It will be noted that the plate 22 is tapered in plan view in the direction away from the channel 18, from the width of the channel to the width of the component 16. This is primarily for aesthetic reasons, and to minimise the shadow cast on the sign plate by the upper component 14. The length of the channel 18 has to be sufficient to connect with the mounting strap 24.
WHAT I CLAIM IS:
1. A device for use in mounting a sign plate generally radially with respect to a supporting post, the device comprising a first component for securing to the post and an elongate second component for securing to the sign plate, the first component having a channel portion and a plate projecting therefrom in the direction away from the channel mouth and in a plane parallel to the line of the channel mouth, the elongate second component having a first flange for securing face-to-face with the plate of the first component and a second flange at right angles thereto for securing face-to-face with one edge portion of the sign plate.
2. A mounting device according to claim 1 wherein the second component comprises a pair of first flanges extending oppositely in a common plane on either side of a pair of second flanges which between them define a slot to receive the edge portion of the sign plate.
3. A mounting device according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the first component is cut from a metal extrusion.
4. A mounting device for securing a sign plate generally radially with respect to a supporting post, substantially as described herein with reference to the drawings accompanying the Provisional Specification.
5. An offset sign mounted on a supporting post by means of a mounting device according to any one of the preceding
Claims (1)
- claims.6. A sign according to claim 5 wherein two said mounting devices are provided at opposite edges of the sign plate.7. An offset sign mounted on a supporting post, substantially as described herein with reference to the drawings accompanying the Provisional Specification.
