Description
(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN PANEL GLAZING SYSTEMS
(71) We, BTR INDUSTRIES LIMI TED, a British Company of Silverton House,
Vincent Square, London, SW1P 2PL, do hereby declare the invention, for which we
pray that a patent may be granted to us, and
the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The invention relates to systems for glazing panels into openings.
According to the invention there is provided a wall having an opening which in cross-section perpendicular to the plane of the opening tapers from one side of the wall
to the other side, and a sheet or panel having an encircling sealing member of elastomeric material located with a jamming fit in the opening.
The invention further provides a method of fitting a sheet or panel into an opening in a wall comprising the steps of forming an opening which in cross-section perpendicular to the plane of the wall tapers from one side of the wall to the other side, fitting a sealing member of elastomeric material around the periphery of the panel and, by lateral movement of the panel from the larger side of the opening towards the tapered side, jam- ming the panel in position.
The inside faces of the wall around the opening may be planar.
The opening may be rectangular with one side of the opening lying in a plane normal to the plane of the opening and three sides of the opening lying in planes which are oblique to the plane of the opening to provide the aforesaid tapering of the opening from one side of the wall to the other side.
More specifically, the bottom side of the opening and the jambs or upright sides of the opening may be oblique to the plane of the opening to provide said taper.
The sheet or panel may comprise a sheet of glass or other infill paneL
A retaining device may be provided which engages the sealing member and which may be fixed to the wall preferably by a plurality of screws to hold the sealing member in jamming engagement in the opening.
The sealing member may comprise an elongate elastomeric strip. of constant transverse cross-section having, on one side thereof, a recess in which the periphery of the sheet or panel engages and, on the opposite side thereof a sealing surface or surfaces for engaging the side of the opening.
Invention also includes sealing strip per se for use in a glazing system according to the invention.
One specific embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a vertical section through a wall having an opening into which is fitted a panel enclosed in a flexible sealing member; and
Figure 2 is a transverse section through a flexible sealing member.
Referring first to Figure 1, a wall 10 has a rectangular opening of which a face 11 is planar and lies obliquely to the plane of the opening and a face 12 is planar and normal to the plane of the opening, providing a taper from one side of the wall to the other. A sheet or panel 14 having an encircling sealing member 13 is located with a jamming fit into the opening and held in position by a retaining clip 15.
Referring to Figure 2 the sealing member 13, made of an elastomeric material has a deep recess 17 whose mouth is narrowed by lip sealing edges 16. A main alignment face 21 extends below and substantially perpendicular to the plane of the recess 17, and a dove-tail channel 20 is cut in a lateral extension 19 of the sealing member. A recess 22 in the main alignment face 21 below the recess 17 allows for expansion of the sheet or panel when fitted. Two sealing fins 23 and 24, the latter being longer, extend in a similar direction below the plane of the main alignment face 21.
When in position for sealing a sheet or panel in an opening as shown in Figure 1, the main alignment face 21 lies along the faces 11 and 12 of the wall, and the sealing fins 23 and 24 are bent to provide a weathertight seal with the wall. The retaining clip 15 is substantially T-shaped, one ann 26 engaging the top of the main inside face 18 of the seal and the other arm 17 engaging the dovetail channel 20 of the seal. The retaining clip 15 is held in position by a plurality of screws 25.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. A glazing system comprising a wall having an opening which in cross-section perpendicular to the plane of the opening tapers from one side of the wall to the other side, and a sheet or panel having an encircling sealing member of elastomeric material located with a jamming fit in the opening so that the seating member is urged by the sheet or panel into seating engagement with the inside faces of the opening.
2. A glazing system as claimed in claim 1 in which the inside faces of the wall around the opening are planar.
3. A glazing system as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 in which the opening is rectangular, one side of the opening lying in a plane normal to the plane of the opening and three sides of the opening lying in planes which are oblique to the plane of the opening to provide the aforesaid tapering of the opening from one side of the wall to the other side.
4. A glazing system as claimed in claim 3 in which the bottom side of the opening and the jambs or upright sides of the opening are oblique to the plane of the opening.
5. A glazing system as claimed in any preceding claim further comprising a retaining device which engages the sealing member and which is secured to the wall to hold the sealing member in jamming engagement in the opening.
6. A glazing system as claimed in any preceding claim in which the sealing member comprises an elongate elastomeric strip of constant transverse cross-section having, on one side thereof, a recess in which the periphery of the sheet or panel engages and, on the opposite side thereof a sealing surface or surfaces for engaging the side of the opening.
7. A method of fitting a sheet or panel into an opening in a wall comprising the steps of forming an opening which in cross-section perpendicular to the plane of the wall tapers from one side of the wall to the other side, fitting a ceiling member of an elastomeric material around the periphery of the panel and by lateral movement of the panel from the larger side of the opening towards the tapered side, jamming the panel in position.
8. A glazing system substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
9. A sealing member for glazing system as claimed in any of claims 1 to 6 and 8 substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompany ing drawings.
10. A method of fitting a sheet or panel into an opening substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
