Description

(54) METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR MAKING CONTAINERS (71) We, METAL BOX LIMITED, of Queens House, Forbury Road, Reading RG1 3JH, Berkshire, England, a British Company, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to containers and to methods and apparatus for making them.
According to the invention in one aspect, a method of making a container of the kind described includes supporting a tubular body within a sleeve engaging the outer surface of the body, heating an end portion of the supported body to soften said end portion introducing the headpiece into said end portion, and applying axial pressure to the end portion while the latter is still soft so as to form from the end portion while the latter is still soft so as to form from the end portion an inwardly directed lip overlapping the headpiece periphery. The body is so positioned in the sleeve that the whole of the end portion to be softened by heating is in close engagement with the sleeve until said axial pressure is applied.
According to another aspect the invention provides apparatus for making a container, said apparatus comprising a base providing a mount for a tubular body, a sleeve upstanding from the base, which sleeve is arranged to support the tubular body by engagement with an outer surface of the body, means to heat at least a portion of the supported body. means to support a head piece within the supported body, and means movable axially of the sleeve and arranged to apply pressure to the heated portion to form said heated portion into an inwardly directed lip engaging the headpiece.
According to a further aspect the invention provides a container made by the method or by means of the apparatus according to the invention.
Various embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example, and with reference to the drawings accompanying the Provisional Specification, in which: Fig. 1 is a sectioned side elevation of the bottom tool apparatus depicted shortly after commencement of operation; Fig. 2 is a part sectioned side elevation of the apparatus of Fig. 1 with a top tool about to be used; Fig. 3 shows the apparatus of Fig. 2 at the end of operation just before the top tool is retracted; Fig. 4 shows diagrammatically an alternative embodiment of the apparatus, having a fixed mandrel; Fig. 5 shows the apparatus of Fig. 4 during heating of the headpiece; and Fig. 6 shows the apparatus of Fig. 4 after forming of an inwardly directed lip.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 it will be seen that one embodiment of the apparatus com prises:- means, in the form of a sleeve 3, to support at least an annular end portion of tubular body 10; means, in the form of an annular pipe 9 distributing hot air, to heat at least part of the supported portion of the body; means, in the form of a chuck 5, to support a head piece 11 within the supported portion of the tubular body 10 and axially movable means, in the form of a pressure ring 13, to form the heated and supported portion 1 0A into an inwardly directed lip engaging the head piece 11.
Referring to Fig. 1, the bottom tool 1 comprises a base member 2, a sleeve 3 fixed thereto and a mandrel 4 reciprocable therein. The base member has a vent pipe 18 extending through it. The mandrel 4 has the chuck 5 at an upper end and a travel limiting means, in the form of a nut 6, at the other end. The mandrel 4 is resiliently sup ported by a spring 7 acting between a collar 8 attached to the mandrel and a portion of the base member 2. In this example the chuck 5 has a protruding portion 5A upstanding therefrom, to tenable it to support a headpiece in the form of a pierced disc.
In Fig. 1 a thermoplastic tubular body 10 has been placed on the base member 2 inside the sleeve 3 so that, at least the portion 10A of the body is in close engagement with the sleeve. The headpiece 11, preferably made from thermoplastic material, has been placed on the chuck 5. In this example the headpiece is frustoconical and has a central nozzle, such as are used on tubes for toothpaste.
Referring to Fig. 2, it will be seen that, at the beginning of the operation of the apparatus, the spring 7 holds the mandrel 4, and therefore the chuck 5, a little way above the top of the sleeve 3 so that hot air may be directed from the annular pipe 9 into the tubular sleeve 3 to heat the upper portion 10A of the body 10. The vent pipe 18, in the base member 2, allows the downwardly directed hot air from the bustle pipe 9 to leave the apparatus.
In Fig. 2 the bottom tool is in the same position as in Fig. 1 and a top tool 12 has been brought towards the bottom tool by known means such as the movement of a press.
The top tool comprises an outer pressure ring 13 and an inner holding means 14 reciprocable therein. The holding means 14 comprises a holding portion 15 mounted on the lower end of a shaft 16, a retaining nut 19 being fixed to the other end of the shaft to limit the travel thereof within the outer pressure ring. In Fig. 2 the holding means 14 is urged to a downward position by a spring 17 which operates between the outer pressure ring 12 and the holding portion 15.
In Fig. 3 the top and bottom tools 1 and 12 are shown in engagement, the spring 17 in the top tool 12 and the spring 7 in the bottom tool 1 are compressed, so that the headpiece 11 is held firmly on the chuck 5 and the mandrel 4 is pushed downwards to locate the periphery of the headpiece 11 within that portion 1 0A of the tubular body 10 which was in the path of the hot air emerging from the annular pipe 9.
In operation of the apparatus, a tubular body 10 is inserted to be supported in the sleeve 3 which engages with the outer surface of the body. The sleeve 3 may optionally be provided with orifices through which a vacuum is drawn to hold the tubular body 10 and prevent the upper portion 1 0A of the tubular body 10 belling out when it is softened by heat. Heat is applied by means of hot air directed from the annular pipe 9.
While the tubular body is heated in the sleeve 3, the headpiece 11 is placed on the chuck 5 and may optionally be heated at its periphery by means of hot air from the annular pipe 9.
The top tool 12 is moved axially towards the bottom tool and the holding portion 15, of inner holding means 14, first pushes the headpiece 11 firmly onto the chuck. Continued downward travel of the top tool 12 brings pressure from the holding means to bear on the mandrel 4 so that both spring 17 on the top tool 12 and spring 7 on the bottom tool 1 are compressed and the mandrel 4 travels to carry the chuck 5 and headpiece 11 at least into the heated portion 1 0A of the tubular body 10 so that the heated portion 1 0A of the tubular body 10 is above the periphery of the headpiece 11.
The outer pressure ring 13 is then brought down against the spring pressures so that a peripheral margin thereof engages wth heated, and therefore softened, portion 1 0A of the tubular body 10 to apply axial pressure to the end portion 10A, while it is still soft, so as to form from the end portion an inwardly directed lip 10B, overlapping the headpiece 11 and so bond the headpiece 11 to the tubular body 10.
Although the invention has been described with reference to a resiliently mounted mandrel, a fixed solid mandrel is also within the scope of the invention as shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6.
Referring to Fig. 4, it will be seen that the apparatus comprises a bottom tool 21 having a base member 22, a sleeve 23 and a rigid mandrel 24 which supports a chuck 25.
A tubular body 10, of thermoplastic material, has been placed within the sleeve 23, so that engagement, between the inside of the sleeve 23 and the outside of the tubular body 10, supports at least an upper portion of the tubular body 10 so that it cannot bell outwards when heated. A headpiece 11, in the form of a nozzle has been positioned on the chuck 25 supported on the rigid mandrel 24, within the tubular body 10, so that an annular portion 1 0A protrudes above the periphery of the headpiece 11.
In Fig. 5, a heating means, in the form of an annular pipe 29, is provided to direct hot air onto the protruding portion 1 0A of the tubular body 10, and the adjacent peripheral portion of the headpiece 11.
In Fig. 6, a top tool 26 is shown in engagement with the bottom tool 21. The top tool has a portion shaped so that it can enter the sleeve 23 and work upon the softened portion 1 0A to form the inwardly directed lip 10B overlapping the headpiece 11 peripherally in like manner to the lip lOB shown in Fig. 3: The apparatus described may either be used to bond the headpiece 11 to the tubular protruding portion 10A or used simply for turning in the portion 10A to make an inturned lip to retain the headpiece. More heat would be applied from the annular pipe 29 to bond than to simply form the inturned lip.
Whereas, in the method described with reference to Figs. 1. 2 and 3, heating of the tubular body portion 10 at least commences before the headpiece 11 is entered therein, in the preferred method of using the apparatus of Figs. 4, 5 and 6 the headpiece 11 is first fitted within the tubular body 10 whereupon heat is applied to both parts.
Although the invention has been described with reference to thermoplastic tubular containers having one end closed by a headpiece in the form of a nozzle (such as those used for toothpaste, cosmetics or food products), it is not limited thereto. Laminated bodies made up from layers of thermoplastic material and for instance aluminium foil or paper are also within the scope of the invention.
Furthermore the headpiece may take a variety of forms such as flat discs or shaped terminal blocks so permitting the manufacture of plastics battery cases, capacitor cases and the like.
It will be noticed that, in the apparatus described, the top tools enter the retaining sleeve and then push initially upon the top of the thermally softened portion of the tubular body. If the tubular body is very thin it could conceivably slide axially past and buckle below the headpiece. However this buckling, of the tubular body 10, can be prevented by introducing air pressure through the vent pipe 18 of Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
Such a vent pipe 18, is indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 4, 5 and 6.
When the top tool is forming the inturned lip. it also interrupts the path of the hot air from the bustle pipe and so economies may be made by shutting off the hot air while the top tool is in use.
