Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO COLLAPSIBLE CONTAINERS FOR THE TRANSPORT OF GOODS (71) We, ROBERT WOODLAND, a British subject of 15, Sullivan Road, Basingstoke, Hampshire and JACK WEDDERBURN, a British subject of 22, Kennersdene, Tynemouth, Tyne and Wear, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to containers for the transport of goods and to kits for assembling such containers.
The object of the present invention is to provide a container which may be of light weight and low cost and which possesses substantial advantages over known containers. Furthermore, the container may of the collapsible type so that it occupies but little volume when collapsed, whereby the costs of transporting empty containers for example on return journeys may be reduced.
A container is known in which one end of a tubular wall is located on a base by location means on the base surrounding the end of the tubular wall. Such a container has the various disadvantages a) that the location means is exposed and vulnerable; b) that rain or foreign matter can penetrate between the end of the tubular wall and the location means with a consequent possibility of damaging the contents; c) that goods to be transported cannot readily be stacked on the base with the tubular wall not in situ because of the need to leave a peripheral space for receiving the end of the tubular wall (consequently foods have to be stacked upon the container with the tubular wall in situ which is equally inconvenient and awkward); and d) that, in the case of a collapsible container, using a collapsible tubular wall, the tubular wall has a tendency to adopt a partially collapsed position when located on the base by the location means.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a kit of parts for a container for transporting goods, comprising a base having thereon adjacent the periphery thereof an upstanding rim for locating a tubular wall of the container, a sheet of wall-forming material provided with parallel transverse folds so that it may be folded to form a rectangular tubular wall so dimensioned as to be locatable on the base surrounding the rim of the base and a lid for the tubular wall.
According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a container for transporting goods, formed from a kit of parts as described above.
One embodiment of the container of the present invention will now be more particularly described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a perspective view of a container in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the drawing the container consists of a base 1 formed by a square upper surface of a wooden pallet 2. The pallet 2 is so constructed that the container may be lifted by, for example the forks of a fork lift truck and is designed to permit entry of the fork into any one of the four sides of the pallet 2.
Mounted upon the base 1 is a square tray-like member 3 made of cardboard or the like formed with an upstanding wall or rim 4 secured together by stapling, stitching or other means to form a locating means. The tray 3 is so dimensioned as to leave about the periphery of the base 1 a supporting edge 5.
A tubular wall 6 comprises a length of stout cardboard or the like creased along parallel hinge lines 7 8, 9, and with marginal end zones of the length stitched stapled or otherwise secured together at 10.
The wall 6 thus formed is locatable upon the base 1 and is so dimensioned that, when so located, it surrounds the rim 4 of the tray 3 and is supported by the peripheral supporting edge 5 of the box 1.
A lid 11 is made in similar fashion to the tray-like member 3 and has depending side and end walls which are dimensioned to fit over the end of the tubular wall 6. Steel strapping or the like, adhesive tape or any other suitable means my be employed to secure the lid 11 to the tubular wall 6 and/ or to the pallet 2.
The tubular wall may be collapsible and of such size that, when collapsed it will lie within the rim of the tray-like member 3.
By this means the collapsed container can occupy only a small fraction of the container when erected and is thus much more easily transportable when empty. It will be appreciated that in the collapsed state, the lid 11 will fit sungly on to the tray-like member 3. The collapsed container may or may not include the pallet 2.
It will be observed that the container of the present invention, unlike the known container discussed hereinbefore, has an uncluttered exterior of pleasing appearance, and possesses the considerable advantages that the location means are protected from damage by the surrounding tubular wall; that ingress of rain or foreign matter into the container is substantially or completely reduced; and that the container can readily be filed with the tubular wall not in position, since the location means provides a clear delineation of the floor area of the container.
In a known collapsible container when the lid is made large enough to fit over the base it then is only a loose fit upon the tubular sleeve. In the container of the present invention, the lid is a tight fit over the tubular sleeve and pilfering of the contents of a filled container is rendered considerably more difficult.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A kit of parts for a container for transporting goods, comprising a base having thereon adjacent the periphery thereof an upstanding rim for locating therearound a tubular wall, a sheet of wall-forming material which is provided with parallel transverse folds so that it may be folded to form a rectangular tube so dimensioned as to be locatable on the base surrounding the peripheral rim, and the lid for the tubular wall.
2. A kit according to Claim 1, wherein the tubular wall, when formed, can be located in a flat folded state, on the base entirely within the upstanding peripheral rim of the base.
3. A kit according to Claim 1 or 2, in which the lid is so dimensioned as to fit over and about the rim of the base.
4. A kit according to any preceding claim, in which the base includes a pallet suitable for handling by means of a forklift truck.
5. A kit according to any preceding claim, in which the base, wall-forming material and/or lid is islare cardboard.
6. A kit of parts for a container for transporting goods, substantially as hereinbefore described, with reference to the accompanying drawing.
7. A container for transporting goods, formed from a kit of parts as claimed in any preceding claim.
8. A container for transporting goods, substantially as hereinbefore described, with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Claims (8)

The wall 6 thus formed is locatable upon the base 1 and is so dimensioned that, when so located, it surrounds the rim 4 of the tray 3 and is supported by the peripheral supporting edge 5 of the box 1. A lid 11 is made in similar fashion to the tray-like member 3 and has depending side and end walls which are dimensioned to fit over the end of the tubular wall 6. Steel strapping or the like, adhesive tape or any other suitable means my be employed to secure the lid 11 to the tubular wall 6 and/ or to the pallet 2. The tubular wall may be collapsible and of such size that, when collapsed it will lie within the rim of the tray-like member 3. By this means the collapsed container can occupy only a small fraction of the container when erected and is thus much more easily transportable when empty. It will be appreciated that in the collapsed state, the lid 11 will fit sungly on to the tray-like member 3. The collapsed container may or may not include the pallet 2. It will be observed that the container of the present invention, unlike the known container discussed hereinbefore, has an uncluttered exterior of pleasing appearance, and possesses the considerable advantages that the location means are protected from damage by the surrounding tubular wall; that ingress of rain or foreign matter into the container is substantially or completely reduced; and that the container can readily be filed with the tubular wall not in position, since the location means provides a clear delineation of the floor area of the container. 1. A kit of parts for a container for transporting goods, comprising a base having thereon adjacent the periphery thereof an upstanding rim for locating therearound a tubular wall, a sheet of wall-forming material which is provided with parallel transverse folds so that it may be folded to form a rectangular tube so dimensioned as to be locatable on the base surrounding the peripheral rim, and the lid for the tubular wall.
2. A kit according to Claim 1, wherein the tubular wall, when formed, can be located in a flat folded state, on the base entirely within the upstanding peripheral rim of the base.
3. A kit according to Claim 1 or 2, in which the lid is so dimensioned as to fit over and about the rim of the base.
4. A kit according to any preceding claim, in which the base includes a pallet suitable for handling by means of a forklift truck.
5. A kit according to any preceding claim, in which the base, wall-forming material and/or lid is islare cardboard.
6. A kit of parts for a container for transporting goods, substantially as hereinbefore described, with reference to the accompanying drawing.
7. A container for transporting goods, formed from a kit of parts as claimed in any preceding claim.
8. A container for transporting goods, substantially as hereinbefore described, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
