Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO AN ARRANGEMENT FOR THE METERED ADDITION OF A GRANULAR ADDITIVE.
(71) We, PLASTORE S.A., a Swiss Body Corporate of Avenue Krieg, 7, 1208 Geneva, Switzerland, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The invention relates to an arrangement for the metered addition of a granular additive, such as granulated material or ground material, to another material to be processed and supplied to a processing machine by a main hopper and a main screw conveyor in communication with one another.
According to the present invention there is provided an arrangement for the metered addition of a granular additive, such as granulated material or ground material, to another material to be processed and supplied to a processing machine by a main hopper and a main screw conveyor in communication with one another, the arrangement comprising a neck member for disposition between the main hopper and the main screw conveyor and having a plurality of faces, each of which is adpated to have removably connected thereto a metering device and there being removably conncted to at least one of the faces, during a metered addition operation, a metering device which includes a screw conveyor disposed in a cylinder, a controllable geared motor for driving the screw conveyor, and a hopper in communication with the cylinder.
This arrangement can be used wherever additive such as coloured granular material, ground material or the like have to be added in an exact proportion to a material to be processed for example, in extruders, injection moulding machines, blasting machines and the like. The neck member is preferably rectangular in cross-section and up to four metering devices may be used per processing machine and pre-mixing is eliminated by the use of such metering devices.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows an arrangement according to the invention in position between a main hopper and a main screw conveyor.
The device arrangement includes a metering device comprising a hopper 8 and controllable geared motor 7 mounted on a bracket 11. The hopper 8 has an inspection window 9 and a cover 10 and has a capacity of approximately 25 kg. Attached to the hopper 8 is a housing 4 for a cylinder 5 and screw conveyor 6.
If necessary, to increase output, up to four different cylinders and screw conveyors and two different drives may be provided.
An output range of approximately 0.2kg/ hour to approximately 170kg/hour can then be achieved.
The arrangement also includes a neck member 3 to one face of which the housing 4 of the metering device is attached, the neck member 3 being inserted between a main hopper 1 and a main screw conveyor 2 of a processing machine.
A motor protection circuit breaker (not shown), is provided for the metering device and an on/off switch and an interval switch can be provided when the metering device is used with a processing machine which does not operate continuously. The electrical pulse which starts the main screw conveyor 2 can also be used for starting the drive motor 7 of the metering device. By means of an incorporated relay, the operating time of the device may be varied continuously per pulse.
To incorporate the arrangement in a processing machine, the neck member 3 is inserted between the cylinder of the main screw conveyor 2 and the main hopper 1 of the machine. The neck member 3 has a rectangular cross section, so that up to four metering devices according to the invention may be attached laterally.
To replace the screw conveyor 6 and cylinder 5 of a metering device, the motor bracket 11 can be swung away from the housing 4. This replacement enables a change to another output range to be made and can take only a few minutes.
As the metering addition of material takes place continuously and directly before processing of the whole material, uniform mixing is achieved and separation is virtually impossible.
If coloured material is being added, the colouring can also be adjusted as the speed of a metering device adding coloured granular material and thus the ratio of quantities of the mixture to be processed can be altered at the gear unit, for example by a handle.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. An arrangement for the metering addition of a granular additive, such as granulated material or ground material, to another material to be processed and supplied to a processing machine by a main hopper and a main screw conveyor in communication with one another, the arrangement comprising a neck member for disposition between the main hopper and the main screw conveyor and having a plurality of faces, each of which is adapted to have removably connected thereto a metering device, and there being removably connected to at least one of the faces during a metered addition operation, a metering device which includes a screw conveyor disposed in a cylinder, a controllable geared motor for driving the screw conveyor, and a hopper in communication with the cylinder.
2. An arrangement according to claim 1, in which the neck member is rectangular in cross section so that four metering devices can be connected thereto.
3. An arrangement according to claim 1 or 2, in which the motor of the or each metering device is supported on a bracket mounted on a housing for the cylinder and screw conveyor. which bracket can be swung away from the housing to permit replacement of the cylinder and screw conveyor.
4. An arrangement for the metered addition of a granular additive, such as granulated material or ground material, to another material to be processed and supplied to a processing machine by a main hopper and a main screw conveyor, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
